Tomoka Oaks Golf Rezoning Shot Down Amid Legal Threats

Ormond Beach City Commission has unanimously rejected a proposal to rezone the former Tomoka Oaks golf course from Planned Residential Development (PRD) to a low-density residential area (R-2). The decision followed strong opposition from local residents and concerns over increased traffic and community disruption. The property owner's threats of a $40 million lawsuit if the rezoning was not approved did not sway the commission. The area will retain its PRD designation, with city leaders indicating openness to some development that aligns better with community expectations.

Gov. DeSantis Signs Bill Modifying Civilian Oversight of Police

Courtesy: Florida Government

Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 601, curbing the investigative powers of civilian police review boards in Florida. The bill, supported predominantly by House Republicans and Senate Democrats, redefines the composition and authority of these boards, now requiring sheriff appointee dominance, also to include a retired law enforcement officer. The ACLU criticized the law as detrimental to police-community trust efforts, while DeSantis praised it as a protective measure for police against undue harassment, highlighting Florida's pro-law enforcement stance compared to more liberal states.
