DeSantis Greenlights Chaplains in Schools, Ignites Religious Liberty Debate

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed two bills that integrate mental health resources and "patriotic organizations" into schools. The first, HB 1317, allows groups like The Boy Scouts and Big Brothers Big Sisters to promote student involvement. The second, HB 931, establishes a school chaplain program permitting volunteer religious leaders to offer counseling, contingent on parental consent. These moves have sparked debate, with critics arguing they blur the line between education and religious influence, particularly criticizing the potential involvement of organizations like The Satanic Temple. Both laws will be effective from July 1.

- Emily K. Troncoso, 34, of Holly Hill, charged with repeat offense battery (April 10). Bail: $1,000.

- Vincent L. Foster, 40, of Holly Hill, faces charges including aggravated battery on a pregnant victim and witness tampering in a felony case (April 10). Bail: $25,000.

- Mark A. Thomas, 53, of Holly Hill, arrested for battery, aggravated assault, and witness tampering (April 11). No bail.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office

- Anthony J. Mann, 59, of Ormond Beach, charged with contractor fraud (April 9). No bail.

- Tammy J. Rhoads, 52, of Ormond Beach, arrested for controlled substance and paraphernalia possession (April 10). Bail: $11,000.

- Oney Sone, 37, of Holly Hill, charged with reckless driving, eluding law enforcement, and lewd behavior (April 10). Bail: $17,500.

- Paul R. Mellette, 44, of Holly Hill, charged with heroin sale (April 11). Bail: $25,000.

- Sean R. Ramberg, 52, of Holly Hill, arrested for controlled substance possession without prescription (April 11). Bail: $3,000.

- Clinton J. Golden, 48, of Holly Hill, charged with controlled substance possession without prescription (April 11). Bail: $2,500.

- Donathan N. Evans, 19, of Ormond Beach, faces charges for controlled substance possession and paraphernalia (April 11). Bail: $3,000.
