It’s not every day you look out over the bay and see a plane… upside down. Around 3:05 p.m. on Aug. 11, a banner-towing airplane made an unplanned water landing in Ponce Inlet — emphasis on in. According to town officials, the pilot and any passengers escaped without injury, making this more of a splashy spectacle than a tragedy.

Ponce Inlet Fire Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Volusia County Beach Safety all sprang into action. A local firefighter even hopped into his boat to ferry rescue workers out to check on everyone involved. By all accounts, the rescue went smoothly — and the incident will likely make for an unforgettable “what happened at work today” story.

🛵 Fatal ATV–Motorcycle Crash on SR 40

Just two days earlier, on the night of Aug. 9, a far more somber incident unfolded on State Road 40. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 35-year-old Ormond Beach man riding a motorcycle was killed when an ATV collided with him near Pine Woods Road.

Investigators say the ATV, driven by a 28-year-old Ormond Beach woman, was traveling west along the eastbound grass shoulder before entering the roadway and striking the motorcycle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The ATV driver and her 22-year-old passenger — also from Ormond Beach — were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing, but the tragedy serves as another reminder of how quickly rural nighttime rides can turn dangerous.

🌊 Watching Tropical Storm Erin’s Next Move

Meanwhile, out over the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Erin is making waves — figuratively for now. Born from Invest 97L, the storm has a 90% chance of intensifying into a hurricane by Thursday, Aug. 14, possibly reaching Category 3 strength by Saturday. While current forecasts from the National Hurricane Center show it curving north and running parallel to Florida’s coastline, meteorologists caution that it’s still too early to call.

In the meantime, Volusia and Flagler counties can expect a return to a more “normal” summer pattern: daily showers, heat indices over 100 degrees, and a moderate rip current risk through midweek. As peak hurricane season begins, the National Weather Service is urging residents to check their hurricane kits and make preparations now — because the only thing less predictable than Florida weather is when you’ll finally find that missing flashlight.
