Park Volusia Beach Driving and Off-Beach Parking Registration for Volusia County Residents Opens October 1

Image: Volusia County

Beginning Oct. 1, Volusia County residents can register their vehicles at www.parkvolusia.org to drive on Volusia County beaches and park in the County’s off-beach parking lots at no charge.

Park Volusia, Volusia County’s new beach driving and off-beach parking program, will be implemented in two phases. Effective Oct. 1, a beach driving day pass will cost $30, and an annual nonresident pass will be $150. On Jan. 1, parking in any of Volusia County’s 65 off-beach parking lots will cost $20 per day and $100 annually for nonresidents.

Volusia County residents must register their vehicles on the Park Volusia website to receive annual passes for beach driving and off-beach parking at no charge.

The registration portal is also available through the Volusia Beaches app, and a new Park Volusia office in Daytona Beach Shores will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, beginning Oct. 1 at 2422 S. Atlantic Ave. A New Smyrna Beach location will open in the near future. The County will also host the following in-person events to assist residents with registration:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 1, 5 – 6:30 p.m.: Daytona Beach Regional Library, 105 Jackie Robinson Parkway

  • Thursday, Oct. 3, 5 – 6:30 p.m.: New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway

  • Sunday, Oct. 6, 2 – 5 p.m.: Ocean Center, 101 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach

  • Monday, Oct. 14, 5 – 6:30 p.m.: Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St.

Nonresidents can also purchase annual passes for beach driving and off-beach parking at www.parkvolusia.org, the Park Volusia Office, the Volusia County Beaches app, and the registration events. Park Volusia resident registrations and annual pass purchases are valid for 365 days. On-beach driving passes purchased between Oct. 1, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2024, will remain valid through expiration. Starting Oct. 1, the Park Volusia website will also provide updated information, including a comprehensive list of FAQs.

Former Teacher Opens CBD Wellness Shop in Ormond Beach

Former teacher Erin Alvalle has opened oHHo Ormond Beach, a holistic wellness store offering CBD and organic hemp products, at Fountain Square Shopping Village. Alvalle, who spent 19 years as an educator in Volusia County, turned to CBD for chronic pain relief earlier this year and was inspired to open the store to help others. The shop, part of East Coast Botanicals, LLC, offers a variety of products including CBD gummies, chocolates, dog treats, and THC seltzers, all sourced from small farms. Alvalle emphasizes the natural, chemical-free nature of oHHo’s offerings and takes pride in educating customers on their benefits. She sees parallels between her teaching career and running the shop, as both involve helping people find solutions that improve their lives. A grand opening for oHHo Ormond Beach is planned soon. Free Workshop Offers Small Businesses Tools for Securing Funding

Volusia County Economic Development will host a small business funding workshop designed to equip entrepreneurs and small business owners with the knowledge and tools necessary to secure crucial funding. The Volusia Business Resources (VBR) Funding Readiness Workshop will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Center at Deltona, located at 1640 Drive Martin Luther King Blvd.

The event will feature Daryle Scott, founder of Venus Swimwear, as the keynote speaker. A Stetson University graduate, Scott started his mail-order business from a dorm room and grew it into Venus Swimwear, a $100 million international brand. He will share his entrepreneurial journey and insights on how he acquired the funding that helped propel his business to success.

In addition to Scott’s keynote, the workshop will include presentations from lenders, financial professionals, and small business consultants. Attendees will gain valuable insight into what lenders and investors expect, how to navigate the application process, and which types of funding are best suited for different business ventures.

Lou Paris, Volusia County Economic Development director, emphasized the high-value learning opportunity the workshop provides. "We package the VBR Funding Readiness tools and experts together to deliver a workshop that can be immediately useful for entrepreneurs or bookmarked for future funding needs," Paris said.

The workshop will also introduce the Volusia Business Resources Funding Readiness Center, a new resource that offers tools for assessing funding readiness, improving financial literacy, and guiding business owners toward outside capital options.

The event is free and includes lunch with the keynote address. Pre-registration is required and can be completed at https://VBR-Funding-Readiness-2024.eventbrite.com.

Why Your Cat Won’t Use the Litter Box – and How to Fix It

If your cat refuses to use the litter box, it can be both frustrating and confusing. Through years of experience in cat rescue, I’ve found that there are several reasons for this behavior. First, rule out any medical issues with a vet visit. If your cat is healthy, the problem could be behavioral or environmental. Feral cats, for example, might not understand the concept of a litter box, and some cats are very particular about the type of litter or box they use.

In my case, a feral cat we adopted had trouble using the litter box, especially after developing an ingrown toenail. Despite trying various products, the breakthrough came with Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter, which helped — but ultimately, my cat’s main issue was cleanliness. Cleaning the litter box 4-5 times a day solved the problem, proving that with patience and adjustments, you can often find a solution to litter box issues.
