The heartbreaking January dog-mauling that took the life of 8-year-old Michael Millett in DeLand has reached a legal conclusion—albeit a limited one. State Attorney William Scheiner announced that his office is filing a second-degree misdemeanor charge against Amanda Franco, one of the dog owners involved. Investigators determined Franco's dog inflicted the fatal injuries, while the second dog’s owner will not face charges.

Under Florida law at the time of the incident, Franco’s dog had not been declared dangerous, leaving prosecutors with few legal options. Despite public outcry and new legislation that went into effect in July, the amended "dangerous dogs" law cannot be retroactively applied.

Scheiner emphasized the need for stronger laws moving forward. "Michael's death will not be for nothing," he said, calling on lawmakers to rethink how the legal system handles such tragedies.

🚧 FDOT to Smooth Out Ormond Beach's "Obstacle Course"

Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach may soon be easier on your shocks—and your sanity. After months of frustration from residents over a $9.2 million road safety project, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has agreed to remove or modify some of the more disruptive road features.

The project added traffic-calming elements like curb extensions and chicanes—meant to slow cars down but seemingly better at damaging them. Resident Marvin Miller dubbed the redesigned road an “obstacle course,” and even Mayor Jason Leslie confessed to leaving tire marks of his own.

Following a city commission meeting and some well-documented scuff photos, FDOT is now removing certain curb extensions and adjusting others. Additional traffic elements are under review, and the entire downtown road project is expected to wrap up this fall.

🥛 Raw Milk Debate Boils Over in Florida

Florida’s top health officials are backing raw milk—despite laws and expert warnings saying it’s unsafe for human consumption. Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson have both expressed support for Floridians’ "freedom" to choose raw milk, just days after their departments advised against it.

In a now-viral post, Ladapo encouraged residents to be informed but also acknowledged potential "health benefits" of raw milk. This comes after 21 people—six of them children—became ill, and seven were hospitalized after drinking raw milk from Keely Farms Dairy in New Smyrna Beach.

The CDC, FDA, and American Medical Association continue to warn that raw milk offers no extra health benefits and is significantly more likely to cause severe illness. Meanwhile, the state's laws still only allow raw milk to be sold for pet use, not human consumption—though some labeling appears murky.

As the raw milk debate simmers, experts are urging caution while state officials tout choice.
