🐾 Trash Compactor Dog Rescue Sparks Outrage and Support

A shocking and heartwarming discovery at a Daytona Beach apartment complex ended in the rescue of a dog now affectionately named “Daytona.” Found silent and scared amid piles of garbage inside a trash compactor, the black mixed-breed pup was trapped for over 12 hours before being saved by resident Brandon Arroyo, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Arroyo and his wife, Heather Jones, responded to a neighbor’s tip, and Brandon used a lead rope to gently pull Daytona to safety. Once home, the couple gave him a bath and began addressing several health concerns, including hip issues, floppy claws that may need removal, and the need for neutering.

Despite his ordeal, Daytona is warming up quickly to his rescuers. “He took to us pretty much immediately and has been just the friendliest, sweetest guy,” Heather shared. Sadly, the apartment complex has no security cameras, complicating efforts to identify whoever might have placed him in the compactor.

The Daytona Beach Police Department is actively investigating the incident and encouraging tips through its non-emergency line. Meanwhile, Brandon and Heather are fostering Daytona and raising funds for his treatment. If no owner comes forward, the couple may give him the permanent, loving home he deserves. You can donate to Daytona’s GoFundMe page here.

🌊 Ormond Beach Seeks Federal Funds for Flood Relief

Following years of soggy setbacks, Ormond Beach is taking action to reduce the flood risk that has plagued neighborhoods near Fleming Avenue. The city has applied for a $9.4 million FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant to build a major new stormwater pump station beside Central Park’s southernmost lake.

This move comes on the heels of a $5.35 million state grant received last year. The new pump station would significantly improve the city's ability to handle storms, discharging up to 45,000 gallons of water per minute into the Halifax River—a move that could safeguard 500 to 600 homes.

First conceived after a 2009 storm dumped 30 inches of rain in under three days, the project aims to build on years of upgrades to the city’s stormwater infrastructure. With a total project cost of $12.5 million, Ormond Beach still needs to secure around $3 million in matching funds, but officials remain optimistic about getting the green light.

💳 Say Goodbye to “Click to Cancel”—And Hello to Subscription Struggles

A rule designed to make canceling subscriptions as easy as signing up just got the axe. On July 8, a U.S. federal appeals court struck down the FTC's "Click to Cancel" rule, which was supposed to streamline subscription and gym membership cancellations. Consumers now face the same old maze of chatbot loops, phone holds, and surprise charges.

Although the FTC aimed to protect consumers from unwanted renewals, the rule was overturned before it took effect due to missing regulatory analysis. The court sided with business groups who argued the process was rushed.

For Floridians, automatic renewal laws do require clear disclosures and reminders, but they don’t make cancellation less frustrating. As for gyms, Florida law offers some relief: You can cancel within three days of signing, and refunds must be issued within 30 days. Contracts can also be terminated for disability or death (with proof).

Still, escaping the treadmill of gym billing often involves high-pressure sales pitches and persistent fees. If you run into trouble, contact the Florida State Attorney’s Office or call 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352).
