👮 Former Officer Jailed for Violent Arrest and Cover-Up

Jacob Cannon
In a ruling that capped off a troubling case, former Ormond Beach Police Officer Jacob Ryan Cannon was sentenced to six months in jail and two years of probation after being found guilty of felony battery. The incident involved Cannon throwing a handcuffed woman, Shanna McRee, to the floor during a volatile arrest on Dec. 6, 2024. McRee sustained a gash requiring seven stitches and now bears a visible scar across her forehead.
Cannon, who resigned from the force in January, was also found to have lied to investigators about the event, leading Judge Kathryn Weston to impose the sentence without leniency. Weston noted the absence of medical attention given to McRee at the time and the subsequent attempts to mislead superiors about the incident. Restitution for McRee is still being determined, with a 60-day window for the court to decide on the amount.

💸 Big Boost for Free Healthcare in Volusia
It was a big day at the Volusia Free Clinic as they celebrated the grand opening of their new facility — and a record-breaking donation to match. Volusia County Women Who Care (VCWWC) awarded the clinic a grant of $35,007.95, the largest single-quarter gift in the organization’s history.
Presented by VCWWC President Teresa Smith during the July 17 ribbon-cutting ceremony, the grant supports a major expansion of the clinic’s capacity to serve uninsured and underserved residents. Thanks to a community-wide effort, the clinic’s new space came complete with donated furnishings, medical equipment, and a full build-out — plumbing and paint included. VCWWC also handed out additional grants to Halifax Urban Ministries and the Early Learning Coalition in support of children’s literacy programs.
As Smith put it, the achievement reflects “the power of collective giving” — and the community's growing commitment to accessible care.

📚 Bell Time: Back-to-School Countdown Begins
Parents, it’s time to dust off those lunchboxes. Central Florida students, including those in Volusia County, are just two weeks away from the start of the 2025-26 school year. Classes begin Monday, August 11, and wrap up on May 28, 2026.
Key dates include holidays like Labor Day (Sept. 1), Thanksgiving week (Nov. 24–28), and winter break (Dec. 22–Jan. 6). Teachers will have professional development days scattered throughout the year, with early release Wednesdays a near-weekly occurrence — except for a few exceptions such as Oct. 8 and Dec. 17.
Mark your calendars and get your school supply lists ready: the academic year is almost in session, complete with backup plans for weather disruptions and all.
