🚗 Fatal I-95 Crash in Ormond Beach Kills North Carolina Woman
A tragic collision on I-95 in Ormond Beach has left a 23-year-old woman from Ramseur, North Carolina, dead after her SUV rear-ended a box truck on Monday afternoon. The Florida Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred at 1:42 p.m. near mile marker 272, just south of the U.S. 1 exit. The SUV, driven by a 24-year-old man from Asheboro, was traveling northbound when it swerved toward the outside shoulder and hit a merging box truck driven by a Palm Coast man.
The woman, a passenger in the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. A third vehicle, driven by an 86-year-old Palm Coast woman, struck debris while trying to avoid the crash but was uninjured. The cause remains under investigation.
FHP continues to piece together what led to the sudden lane change that ended in tragedy.

🎆 Volusia County Preps for Fourth of July with Beach Rules and Holiday Hours
Whether you’re planning a beach day or just trying to figure out when to take out the trash, Volusia County has your Independence Day covered. County offices will be closed Friday, July 4, but key services like solid waste pickup in unincorporated areas remain on schedule—just have those bins out by 6 a.m.
Tomoka Landfill and the West Volusia Transfer Station will be open with holiday hours, but administrative solid waste offices will be closed until July 7. Meanwhile, Votran will run a limited Sunday schedule on select routes, and the library system will close early July 3 and remain shut on the Fourth.
If your celebration includes a beach trip, download the Volusia Beaches app for real-time access updates, and remember: fireworks are strictly banned on county beaches to protect wildlife and other beachgoers.

🏘️ Concerned About Overdevelopment? One City Defies State Law with Development Moratorium
In a bold move that could spark legal fireworks of its own, the Deltona City Commission voted to enact a residential development moratorium—despite a brand-new state law designed to prevent just that. Senate Bill 180, signed June 26, aims to streamline disaster recovery and restricts local control over development. But Deltona officials argue their flooding issues and infrastructure concerns demand immediate action.
The city’s decision has already prompted a pre-suit notice from developers, and opinions on the commission are split. District 4 Commissioner Dori Howington supports the move, citing unresolved stormwater problems. Mayor Santiago Avila Jr., however, warns this could hurt Deltona's relationship with Tallahassee and drain taxpayer dollars.
The commission plans to address the potential lawsuit at its July 7 meeting. For now, the city's development pause remains in place—and the political drama is far from over.

🌧️ Tropical Disturbance Could Dampen Florida’s Holiday Weekend
As Floridians prepare to celebrate the Fourth, Mother Nature has plans of her own. A disorganized tropical disturbance in the eastern Gulf is bringing increased rain chances through the weekend. While it’s not expected to strengthen significantly, it could linger off the coast and bring 2-4 inches of rain to much of the state.
Fortunately, any potential tropical development is likely to remain weak due to dry air and wind shear. Still, localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, and beachgoers should be cautious.
While July typically isn’t a busy month for hurricanes, this is your reminder that we’re in the thick of hurricane season. Keep an umbrella handy—and maybe don’t light that sky rocket near a soggy sand dune.
