🐬 Four Dolphins Relocated to Marineland During Legal Turmoil
Amid financial troubles and ongoing investigations, four dolphins were moved to Marineland Dolphin Adventure this week. Their former home, Gulf World Marine Park, is under federal scrutiny after animal welfare violations and the deaths of four dolphins since late 2024. The facility’s parent company, The Dolphin Company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March and is seeking up to $8 million in financing. In response, Florida officials executed a search warrant in March after inspectors were denied access to animals on site. A court-appointed animal welfare expert is now monitoring both facilities. The recent dolphin transfer is part of a larger effort to ensure better conditions and oversight as the investigation continues.

🧜♂️ Medical Examiner Dives into a Cold Case — Literally
A missing diver’s mystery dating back to 2006 has finally been solved, thanks to Volusia County Medical Examiner Dr. James Fulcher — who just so happens to be a certified diver himself. When advanced DNA technology recently identified remains recovered near Ponce Inlet as those of Robert Martin, Fulcher’s diving background proved essential. He and a sheriff’s detective examined Martin’s gear and concluded it was likely a tragic accident, not foul play. The analysis was aided by forensic genetic genealogy, funded by a state grant targeting long-unidentified remains. Fulcher said the condition of the dive equipment and the known hazards at the site, known as the “party grounds,” helped tell the story. Martin’s family has now received closure after nearly two decades of unanswered questions.

🏥 Encompass Health Launches $60M Rehab Hospital in Daytona
Daytona Beach just gained a major healthcare asset with the opening of the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital — a $60 million facility aimed at serving the region’s growing older population. Located on N. Williamson Blvd., the 50-bed hospital (starting with 20 beds) includes private rooms, advanced therapy equipment, and a full team of specialized staff. Over 100 jobs have been created, and future expansions are already in the works. Local physician Dr. Gerald Woodard will lead the medical team while continuing his private practice. The facility was brought to the area with support from city and county leaders, along with up to $300,000 in tax incentives per year. As more retirees settle in the region, officials say Encompass will fill a crucial gap in rehabilitation services.

🌀 50+ Volunteers Join Volusia’s Emergency Response Corps
At a time when community preparedness is more important than ever, over 50 residents joined the inaugural meeting of the Volusia Ready Response Corps. The open house event, held June 5 at the Emergency Operations Center in Daytona Beach, offered tours and insights into how volunteers can assist during hurricanes, wildfires, and other natural disasters. Participants will receive ongoing training throughout the year, covering everything from severe weather events to heat waves. Volusia Community Services Director Brad Burbaugh praised the new volunteers as a critical asset for local resilience. Anyone interested can still get involved — the time commitment is flexible, and all skill sets are welcome.
