⚡ FPL Rate Hike to Hit Millions in 2026

Hold onto your thermostats — Florida Power & Light (FPL) has received the green light to raise rates beginning in 2026, in what’s being described as one of the largest utility rate increases in state history. Approved by the Florida Public Service Commission on Nov. 20, the new rates are set to impact an estimated 12 million customers statewide.

A typical monthly bill will rise by $2.50 next year, eventually reaching as high as $150 per month by 2029. FPL justifies the hike by pointing to Florida’s rapid population growth and vulnerability to hurricanes — both of which strain the state’s power grid.

The rate change, however, is not without controversy. Consumer advocates argue the settlement unfairly favors corporate interests, and grassroots organizations are calling on lawmakers to introduce legislation for more affordable energy options.

If you're looking to cut costs, experts recommend small energy-saving adjustments: unplug devices, use power strips, lower your water heater temperature, and set your thermostat conservatively.

⚖️ Utility Showdown: Daytona & Ormond Beach Head to Court

The clock is ticking as Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach brace for a legal showdown over Avalon Park’s utility service rights — and the potential price tag could be steep. Daytona Beach has offered Ormond $2.3 million to settle the dispute before it goes to trial on Dec. 8, a figure that would essentially buy out Ormond’s rights to provide water and wastewater services to the sprawling Avalon Park development.

But there’s a snag: Ormond Beach hasn’t even discussed the offer. At their last commission meeting on Nov. 18, the proposal wasn’t on the agenda, and no private legal meeting was held to review it. Meanwhile, Daytona Beach is gearing up for significant trial preparation costs now that a judge has denied a motion to delay proceedings — a move intended to keep pressure on all sides to reach a settlement.

The outcome will determine who controls vital utility infrastructure for a project that could add nearly 8,000 homes within Daytona’s city limits, directly impacting neighboring Ormond’s infrastructure.

🚦 Can You Text at a Red Light in Florida?

It’s a common question among drivers: Is it illegal to check your phone while stopped at a red light in Florida? The short answer — no, it’s not.

Under Florida law, using your phone for texting or entering data while actively driving is prohibited, but when your vehicle is stopped at a red light, you’re in the clear. The statute defines “operation” as active motion, so if you’re stationary at a light, technically, you're not violating the texting law.

However, using your phone while driving — even hands-free — is limited. Talking is allowed only through hands-free devices like Bluetooth or speakerphone. In school and work zones, handheld phone use is entirely banned and can result in fines and license points.

A first-time offense for texting while driving brings a $30 fine (before fees) and no points. A second offense within five years could cost you $60 and three points on your license.

So go ahead and check that text at a red light — just make sure you’re parked, not rolling.
