🎯 Volusia Schools Deploy AI to Detect Guns in Real Time
Volusia County Schools is stepping into the future of campus safety with the launch of the ZeroEyes AI gun detection system across all its public schools. The system works with existing security cameras to flag visible firearms, sending real-time alerts to a 24/7 operations center staffed by military and law enforcement veterans. If a threat is confirmed, emergency responders and school staff can be notified within seconds.
Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin says the goal is to let students focus on learning, not fear. The program adds to the district’s layered safety approach, which already includes safe school officers, Centegix emergency alert badges, and single-point entry at all schools.
With over 60,000 students and more than 70 schools, Volusia joins Seminole County and Daytona Beach in leveraging AI to prevent tragedy.

🔥 Wildfire Near S.R. 11 Prompts Caution for Drivers
A wildfire burning in southern Flagler County near State Road 11 has scorched roughly 50 acres, prompting the Florida Highway Patrol to warn drivers about possible visibility hazards. The fire, located about two miles south of County Road 304, is being monitored by both troopers and the Florida Forest Service.
The smoke could cause fog-like conditions, especially during early morning and nighttime hours. Authorities are urging motorists to slow down, use low beams, and be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions.
With Florida’s dry season intensifying, residents are also encouraged to monitor wildfire activity using the Florida Forest Service’s public dashboard.

🌕 Rare Lunar Standstill Brings a Low-Flying Full Moon on June 11
Mark your calendar and set your alarm: Florida’s next full moon, also known as the Strawberry Moon, will peak at 3:44 a.m. on June 11, and it’s set to be the lowest full moon we’ll see until 2043. This rare event is part of what astronomers call a major lunar standstill, a phenomenon that happens only once every 18.6 years.
Because of its unusually low position—just 22 degrees above the southern horizon—the moon will appear larger, and may take on a reddish or orange hue, especially if viewed through humid Florida air near the coast.
If you’re an early riser or a night owl, look south for the best view. Miss it this time? You'll be waiting a couple of decades for a repeat.
