❤️ Halifax Urban Ministries Marks 45 Years of Serving the Community

For 45 years, Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) has been helping bridge the gaps for families, veterans, and individuals facing hardship throughout Volusia and Flagler counties. What began as a collaboration among local churches and community leaders in 1981 has grown into one of the area's most respected nonprofit organizations. To celebrate the milestone, HUM will host its 45th Anniversary Soirée on Oct. 22 at The Shores Resort & Spa, 2627 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach. Proceeds will support programs including veteran housing, emergency rental assistance, food distribution, and transportation assistance. Looking ahead, HUM hopes to expand services by adding more homeless shelters and creating a permanent daytime dining space that offers clients a more dignified place to enjoy a meal.

Shifting to public safety, Volusia County leaders are scheduled to vote Tuesday on a proposal that could create Florida's first local domestic violence offender registry. The proposed database would initially include individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses twice, though officials are also discussing whether registration should begin after a first conviction. Supporters say the registry would provide residents with valuable information to help make informed personal safety decisions. County officials note Volusia ranks fourth in Florida for domestic violence cases, with approximately 4,000 reported incidents each year. If approved, the registry would publicly display qualifying offenders' names, conviction details, and related information, following a model similar to Tennessee's recently adopted Savannah's Law.

🚒 Daytona Beach Names Interim Fire Chief

Daytona Beach Fire Department has appointed Chris Hughes as interim fire chief following the retirement of longtime Chief Dru Driscoll. Hughes brings 25 years of experience with the department, including 17 years in leadership roles and a recent promotion to deputy chief earlier this year. A certified paramedic, fire instructor, fire safety inspector, and Fire Officer III, Hughes says his priorities will center on accountability, integrity, transparency, and maintaining the department's high standard of emergency service. 🚗 Florida Clears Up Confusion Over License Plate Frames

Finally, Florida drivers will soon have clearer guidance on what is—and isn't—allowed when it comes to license plate frames. Beginning Oct. 1, Senate Bill 488 officially clarifies that license plate frames remain legal as long as they do not cover identifying information, including the plate number or the registration decal. The update follows confusion surrounding last year's law prohibiting license plate obscuring devices, which led some motorists to believe decorative frames were entirely banned. The new legislation reinforces that while altering, defacing, or obscuring a license plate remains illegal, ordinary frames that leave all required information visible are perfectly acceptable. It's a small clarification that should help prevent unnecessary misunderstandings for Florida drivers.
