🐾 Halifax Humane Society to Open Affordable Pet Hospital

The Halifax Humane Society (HHS) is stepping up for Volusia County’s furry residents with a $2.9 million purchase of the former Latitude Margaritaville sales office on LPGA Boulevard. The 8,152-square-foot building and surrounding 3-acre property will be transformed into the Halifax Humane Society Community Veterinary Hospital, a major step in addressing the growing need for accessible veterinary care.

This year, the shelter has seen a staggering increase in pet surrenders—tripling in volume—mainly due to owners struggling to afford basic care. The new hospital aims to reverse this trend by providing affordable medical services for cats and dogs, including an emergency fund for pet parents with no financial means.

The project is funded through a generous legacy gift from an anonymous donor and will require another $2 million for renovations and equipment. HHS is planning to open its doors in late 2026, and naming rights for program areas are on the table as a creative fundraising strategy.

As CEO Sean Hawkins put it, “We’re deeply grateful for the generosity and partnership that made this dream achievable.”

💳 Daytona Beach Debates Audit of City Card Use

In a split decision that has stirred plenty of local chatter, the Daytona Beach City Commission has voted not to prioritize an audit into alleged misuse of city-issued purchasing cards (P-Cards) by non-city employees. This comes after Commissioner Stacy Cantu raised concerns that expenses charged to P-Cards may have violated policy.

While some commissioners pushed for the audit to take center stage, Mayor Derrick Henry advocated for letting the process unfold as scheduled, warning against feeding into what he called damaging misinformation. He acknowledged that the audit could reveal wrongdoing—but insisted that there's no need to jump the queue.

City Manager Deric Feacher maintains there’s been no misspending. However, questions deepened when it was revealed that some social security numbers were accidentally displayed on the city's website alongside receipt uploads. That content has since been removed.

The audit will proceed, but in the standard order, not as a special priority. For now, the city's approach is wait-and-see, despite continued public interest in how tax dollars are being managed.

🚗 New Publix Kiosk Makes Tag Renewal a Breeze in Ormond Beach

Grabbing groceries and renewing your vehicle registration are no longer separate errands—at least not at the Publix located at 1258 Ocean Shore Blvd. in Ormond Beach. Volusia County drivers can now use a new self-service kiosk at this location to renew their registration and print a fresh decal on the spot.

No need to trek to a DMV or wait in line—just bring your renewal notice with PIN (or license plate number and DOB of the primary owner), swipe your credit card, and walk out with your new tag. The kiosks are part of a countywide rollout designed to reduce wait times and add flexibility to everyday errands.

Just be prepared for a $4.50 service fee and a 2.3% card fee—both payable at the kiosk. While not all vehicle types qualify (sorry, boat and personalized plate owners), most standard auto renewals can be handled in under five minutes complete with stickers.

This marks another win for convenience at the store where you already pick up your Pub Sub.

🛑 Charlie Kirk Road Proposal Meets Community Resistance

Things got heated at the Nov. 18 Volusia County Council meeting as residents turned out in force to oppose a proposal to name part of Maytown Road in Osteen after conservative pundit Charlie Kirk.

Council Chair Jeff Brower introduced the motion to honor Kirk—who was shot and killed in September—for his civic activism. But many in the audience pushed back, citing Kirk’s history of controversial statements on race, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration. Some turned their backs in protest, while others vocally condemned the idea as divisive.

While only a few supported the motion, including local Turning Point USA members, the proposal was ultimately tabled “indefinitely.” The Council instead plans to discuss how to set broader policies on naming public infrastructure—perhaps sidestepping future controversy.
