🚔 High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrest
A multi-agency pursuit ended Thursday, Aug. 20, when 41-year-old Scott Taylor of Deltona was arrested following a crash on State Road 44. Authorities say Taylor was fleeing the Florida Highway Patrol when he exited I-95 in Ormond Beach and carjacked a woman’s vehicle at Destination Daytona. Automated license plate readers later spotted the stolen vehicle heading toward New Smyrna Beach, helping law enforcement track it. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Taylor reached speeds of 137 mph before crossing into oncoming traffic and crashing into two vehicles. He was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including carjacking, battery, grand theft of a motor vehicle and fleeing or attempting to elude.

⚜️ New Orleans Flavor Comes to Ormond
New Orleans Original Creole/Cajun Cafe is set to open Saturday, Aug. 29, at 188 E. Granada Blvd., bringing a taste of the French Quarter to downtown Ormond Beach. Owner Brett Blanchard, who grew up near New Orleans, and his family have assembled a focused menu featuring shrimp po’boys, charbroiled oysters, beignets, sno-balls and king cakes. The family says the goal is quality over quantity, with recipes gathered from relatives and friends and son Joey Mendez leading the kitchen. Renovations have given the former Gili’s Kitchen space a Mardi Gras-inspired makeover, complete with the open, welcoming feel of a Bourbon Street cafe. For Blanchard, the restaurant fulfills a vision that began when he moved to Ormond Beach 25 years ago.

🎣 Anglers Weigh a Brighter Afternoon
The debate over permanent daylight saving time could have an interesting wrinkle for anglers. The U.S. House has passed the Sunshine Protection Act, but the measure still faces the Senate before becoming law. For fishermen, keeping daylight saving time year-round would mean darker winter mornings but an extra hour of afternoon sunlight. That could shift routines at bait shops and charter operations, with Granada Bait & Tackle owner Ike Leary suggesting a later sunrise might prompt him to move his weekend opening from 6 to 7 a.m. Charter boats could also gain another hour of warmer afternoon passenger service. Of course, the fish won’t be resetting their watches. And history offers perspective: year-round daylight saving time was tried in the 1970s before being quickly reversed.
