🐎 Horses on the Horizon for Volusia Beaches?

From pups to ponies, Volusia County may soon be expanding its beach visitor list. Following the success of a dog-friendly beach zone in Ormond Beach, Councilman Troy Kent is pushing for horseback riding to be permitted along specific county beach zones.

Though still in the discussion phase, the proposal would allow for beachside rides in designated north and south locations. Riders would need cleanup gear, of course, and trailers would be welcome. Kent even offered his own district as the pilot location.

While District 5 Councilman David Santiago opposed the talks, the idea is far from novel—beaches in St. Johns County and the Canaveral National Seashore already offer horseback riding.

It’s still early, but if successful, this initiative could add a charming new dimension to Volusia’s coastal experience. Saddle up—your beach day may soon come with hoofprints.

🎖️ “Poppy Moments” in Ormond Beach

U.S. Air Force veteran Capt. Andrew Hoffman reminded the Ormond Beach community what Memorial Day is truly about with his heartfelt address at the city’s annual remembrance ceremony. Referencing the iconic war poem In Flanders Fields, Hoffman spoke of “poppy moments”—those solemn times when the sight of a red poppy brings a surge of reflection and gratitude.

Hoffman shared powerful memories from his 32-year military career, including a poignant story of diverting a mission in the 1980s to return a fallen soldier's remains. A poppy tucked into the strap of the coffin served as a silent salute, reinforcing the solemn significance of their service.

The event, which featured music by the Daytona Beach Concert Band and a wreath-laying ceremony, also included opening remarks from Col. R. Bancroft McKittrick. Both speakers emphasized that while the debt owed to fallen heroes cannot be repaid, it can—and must—be remembered.

🧱 Lego Sets and Soul Food Revive Volusia Mall

As national chains shutter locations, Daytona’s Volusia Mall is rethinking retail by spotlighting local flavor—literally and figuratively. The mall’s newest attractions include Florida Mans Toys, an independent shop selling new and retired Lego sets. Owner David Gueits is turning nostalgia into community engagement with Lego build events, robotics classes, and even a free minifig for students with good grades.

In addition to creative play, the mall’s food court is getting a much-needed reboot. Though Sakura Japan closed in early May, two newcomers are on the way: an as-yet-unnamed pizzeria and Off The Chain Soul Food, set to open before Biketoberfest. Restaurateur Mikal “Kel” Moore, a Daytona native, is behind the venture and brings a successful background from Michigan’s culinary scene.

Volusia Mall is also welcoming more local shops like Native Home Marketplace, a curated collection of handmade goods. Together, these additions aim to turn the mall into a true community hub.
