Hurricane Debby’s Surge Creates Cliff in Flagler Beach Despite Coastal Reinforcement

Central Florida’s coast experienced the effects of Hurricane Debby through rough ocean conditions, though it did not make a direct hit. On Monday, Flagler Beach residents found a 6-foot cliff along the shore, a consequence of strong storm surge and high tide. This erosion occurred despite efforts by the Army Corps of Engineers and Flagler County to enhance coastal defenses with a dredging project that reinforced dunes and widened beaches. The project’s sand partially washed back into the ocean, but officials confirmed that it still served its purpose by creating a larger barrier for the dunes and State Road A1A. Flagler’s Coastal Engineering Administrator noted that the movement of sand is part of the natural process of beach protection and that the sand is expected to return to the beach, continuing to safeguard the coastal infrastructure.

Tragic Accident - Woman Electrocuted While Working in Barn

On Friday evening, Volusia Sheriff’s Office detectives launched a death investigation at Halifax Hospital in Deltona, following the tragic death of a 39-year-old woman from Lake Helen. Reports suggest that the woman was electrocuted in an accident at her home.

Preliminary findings reveal that the woman and her husband were working in their barn amid heavy rain when the incident occurred. The husband reportedly heard his wife cry out and found her holding a metal drum fan, which appeared to be causing the electric shock. He managed to disconnect the fan and performed CPR until emergency responders arrived.

Detectives observed water puddles in the barn and noted that the fan’s power cable was severely damaged. The investigation is ongoing, and the medical examiner will determine the official cause of death after conducting an autopsy.
