🐟 Crabby Joe’s Weathering the Storm with a Smile
At Crabby Joe’s Deck & Grill, the sun is still shining—and the fryers are still sizzling. Despite a Tropical Storm Watch for Volusia County, the Daytona Beach Shores staple is keeping its doors open and its eyes on the forecast.
Co-managers Jacqueline Vetter and Danielle Nichols know all too well the power of a storm. Hurricane Ian shuttered their waterfront restaurant for nearly two years. Now, with Tropical Depression 9 potentially strengthening into Tropical Storm Imelda, they’re not taking any chances.
“We move the furniture in, prep the staff, and just hope for the best,” Nichols said. The restaurant team emphasizes readiness year-round, especially with their deck perched right over the Atlantic.
The storm, expected to remain 100 miles offshore, is still forecast to bring 7-to-9-foot waves, strong winds, and dangerous rip currents through midweek. But unless the weather turns worse, Crabby Joe’s will continue serving seafood with a side of sunshine.

🚨 Tragedy at Sea Highlights Dangerous Rip Currents
While some locals are enjoying the beach despite the weather, authorities are urging caution after a tragic drowning in Volusia County. A 51-year-old out-of-state visitor was pulled out by a rip current and could not make it back to shore, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Lifeguards have performed hundreds of rescues in recent days as the Atlantic grows more aggressive, influenced by Tropical Depression 9 spinning offshore. The combination of strong surf and rip currents has made swimming conditions treacherous.
Red flags are flying along the beach, signaling dangerous conditions. Officials are reminding everyone to stay out of the ocean for now, and if you do go near the water, only swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower.
With more rough surf on the horizon as the storm passes through early next week, this incident is a sobering reminder: the ocean doesn’t take warnings lightly—and neither should we.
