Florida's Medical Marijuana Market Sees New Opportunities After Amendment 3 Defeat
Amendment 3, a proposal to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida, narrowly missed the required 60% vote, despite nearly 6 million supporting votes. While this outcome is a blow to companies like Trulieve, which spent nearly $143 million on the campaign, industry observers see an opportunity for the state’s medical marijuana market to expand. The recreational proposal would have allowed licensed operators to serve adults without medical cards, but with its failure, Florida’s medical marijuana industry, already the largest in the U.S., may gain traction as consumers turn to regulated dispensaries. Governor Ron DeSantis opposed the measure, criticizing its corporate backing and lack of home cultivation provisions. Looking forward, industry leaders hope lawmakers will support policies that ease access to medical marijuana by reducing costs and extending registration periods, while also addressing the competition from the state’s booming hemp industry.
Who is Susie Wiles Named as First Woman Chief of Staff in Historic Trump Appointment?
Photo: @SUSIEWILES on X
President-elect Donald Trump has selected Susie Wiles as his incoming Chief of Staff, marking her as the first woman to assume this top White House role. A veteran strategist with deep Florida ties, Wiles has been integral to Trump’s political successes, managing his 2016 Florida campaign and later shaping the Save America PAC. Her appointment follows a series of predecessors who faced tumultuous tenures, underscoring the high stakes involved in Trump’s return to the White House. Wiles’ political career began in Washington, followed by significant roles in Jacksonville’s local government and several major Republican campaigns. As she prepares to lead Trump’s transition, Wiles confronts unique challenges, including navigating Trump’s complex legal and political landscape, building on her experience from the Save America PAC. Observers expect Wiles to bring stability and strategic direction to the White House amid the shifting dynamics of Trump’s administration.
American Freight Shutters Stores Nationwide as Parent Company Refocuses

American Freight furniture stores are closing nationwide, including two in Volusia County, as part of a strategic shift by its parent company, Franchise Group Inc. The closures, which affect stores in Port Orange and Daytona Beach, are intended to redirect resources toward Franchise Group’s other brands, including Pet Supplies Plus, The Vitamin Shoppe, and Buddy’s Home Furnishings. The company cited inflation and economic challenges as primary reasons for shuttering the struggling furniture chain. Franchise Group CEO Andrew Laurence described the move as essential to strengthening their market-leading brands. The liquidation sales began on November 5, with the company aiming to reduce debt and bolster its other businesses. Locally, The Vitamin Shoppe operates in Daytona Beach and Palm Coast, while Buddy’s has a presence in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and DeLand. Pet Supplies Plus’s nearest location is in Sanford.
Illegal Sales of Alcohol and Nicotine Targeted By Volusia County Sheriff
In response to local concerns, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office recently took enforcement action to curb illegal sales of nicotine and alcohol to minors in the area, targeting two Ormond Beach locations cited for underage sales violations.
During a recent operation, an undercover buyer attempted purchases at 12 establishments, with six of them selling restricted items to the underage customer. Among the violators were Galaxy 2 Smoke Shop on Nova Road and a Mobil gas station on Yonge Street in Ormond Beach, both now facing criminal charges as well as review by the Florida Alcoholic Beverage and Tobacco Division.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood emphasized that businesses must follow laws regarding age-restricted products, stating, “We’re not going to stop enforcing the law just because certain businesses want to ignore it.” The Sheriff’s Office continues to stress the importance of lawful sales practices to protect the community’s youth.
