Historic Flagler Playhouse in Bunnell Ravaged by Fire
n a tragic turn of events, the historic Flagler Playhouse in Central Florida was engulfed in flames late Sunday evening. The alarm was raised close to 10 p.m. when thick plumes of smoke were seen emanating from the building's eaves, with the main fire source identified at the rear. The inferno rapidly consumed the attic.
A coordinated effort to combat the blaze saw participation from multiple fire departments, including Flagler County Fire Rescue, Palm Coast Fire Department, Flagler Beach Fire Department, and Ormond Beach Fire Department Station 92. Due to the predominantly wooden interior and the complex architecture resulting from various additions over the years, the fire presented a labyrinthine challenge. Concerns about the structural integrity of the building and potential risks to the firefighters led to a decision to tackle the fire from the exterior.
Thankfully, the theater had been vacant for approximately six hours prior to the incident, ensuring no casualties. The aftermath paints a grim picture, with the interior likened to a "warzone." Burned trusses, collapsed seating, and a tangle of debris, insulation, and wiring mark the devastation.
Constructed in 1957, the Flagler Playhouse, formerly the First Baptist Bunnell, has been a cornerstone of Bunnell's history. Preston Zepp, from the Flagler County Historic Society located opposite the playhouse, expressed the community's sorrow, emphasizing the theater's iconic status. The recent plans to establish a historic district in the vicinity had envisioned the playhouse as a key highlight. The extent of the damage casts a shadow on its future, even as the community hoped for its restoration. Adding to the community's woes, the much-anticipated show, "The Play That Goes Wrong," was slated for a debut this week. 🔥
