Partly Cloudy Today

A cool, dry front is set to sweep in this evening, leading to gustier conditions by Saturday afternoon. This shift will bring a mild chill to the air for Veterans Day, with temperatures hovering in the comfortable upper 70s. Clear skies are anticipated until Sunday when the brisk ocean winds are forecasted to bring scattered showers our way. Expect a string of breezy days to carry us into the following week, effectively waving goodbye to the 80-degree weather and welcoming a stretch of cooler temperatures.

Not in Ormond Beach..BUT..Quick-Thinking Child Escapes Abduction; Florida Couple in Custody

Michael Diaz and Taiana Tersano were arrested in Hollywood, Florida, after a failed attempt to lure a 9-year-old girl into their van. The girl's quick reaction to flee and the protective actions of her mother's boyfriend prevented the abduction. The couple, who had their own child with them, were later found by police. During the arrest, Tersano resisted officers, resulting in additional charges.

Volusia County Seeks State Funds to Thwart Belvedere Fuel Facility

Volusia County is actively seeking state intervention to prevent the establishment of a fuel storage and distribution facility in Ormond Beach. The county's deputy manager announced intentions to request $4.5 million from the Florida Legislature to facilitate the relocation of the proposed site. This move comes amid strong opposition from local residents and officials, who have raised concerns about the potential safety and environmental risks associated with the facility planned by Belvedere Terminals.

The facility, intended for construction on Hull Road near U.S. 1, has already secured an air-quality construction permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Despite assurances from Belvedere officials regarding safety measures, the community remains unconvinced and is looking for ways to halt the project.

In a recent meeting, the Volusia County Council unanimously agreed to explore the purchase or lease of the land in question and to consider expanding the Interlocal Service Boundary Agreement with Ormond Beach, which could give the city more control over the property. However, the mayor of Ormond Beach has expressed reluctance to include the land in the agreement, fearing it would obligate the city to unwanted annexation and utility provisions.

The council's actions reflect a broader strategy to leverage all available means to address the community's concerns, although the state law limits the county's ability to impose stricter land regulations until 2024.

Intoxicated Driver's Fatal Mistake Leads to Conviction in Couple's Death

The conviction of Jessica Jean Mulero, 43, of Daytona Beach marks a resolution to a tragic event that shook the Daytona Beach community in June 2021. Mulero's impaired driving led to a fatal collision at the intersection of Mason Avenue and North Ridgewood Avenue, claiming the lives of Marcelino and Valerie Gasparini. Found with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit and positive for THC, Mulero now faces up to 31 years in prison for two counts of DUI manslaughter and an additional misdemeanor for property damage. The case, prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Kevin Sullivan and investigated by local law enforcement agencies, highlights the community's zero-tolerance stance on driving under the influence.

As the community continues to mourn the loss of the Gasparinis, the conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of drunk driving. The incident has spurred a call to action for responsible drinking and driving, especially as the holiday season approaches—a period notorious for an increase in DUI incidents. State Attorney R.J. Larizza's statement post-verdict underscores the importance of sober driving and the ongoing efforts to prevent such needless tragedies. With Mulero's sentencing set for December 20th, the legal proceedings draw to a close, but the impact of the event on the Daytona Beach community endures.

Veterans Day is Tomorrow-Let’s Honor Our Vets

As November 11th approaches, our community joins the nation in observing Veterans Day, a solemn tribute to the men and women who have donned the uniform to serve our country. This day, originally commemorated as Armistice Day marking the end of World War I, has evolved into an annual homage to all American veterans, acknowledging their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the ideals of liberty and justice.

The cessation of hostilities of the Great War on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, heralded a time of peace and remembrance. It's a historical moment that reminds us of the price of peace and the valor required to maintain it. Veterans Day is not just a federal holiday; it's a national pause—a collective, heartfelt salute to those who have served.

Yet, the recognition of our veterans' valor and commitment should not be confined to a single day. These brave individuals have woven the fabric of our nation's freedom with their unwavering spirit and profound sacrifices. Their stories of heroism and the legacies they have left behind are lessons that enrich our lives daily. As such, honoring our veterans is a year-round commitment that transcends ceremonial observances.

We can express our gratitude in various ways: engaging with veterans in our community, supporting veteran-owned businesses, or volunteering with organizations dedicated to veterans' welfare. Each act of kindness, each moment of understanding, and each opportunity provided reflects our enduring respect and appreciation.

As we approach Veterans Day, let us renew our commitment to remember, honor, and serve our veterans every day. Their service extends beyond the battlefield; it's etched into the everyday freedoms we enjoy. Let's ensure our gratitude is just as enduring.

To our veterans, we owe a debt that is both profound and perennial. Today, on Veterans Day, and on all days, we stand in respect and gratitude for your service.
