On November 8, Kerry Sprague, a Coast Guard veteran from Daytona Beach, suffered a tragic loss when her home caught fire, resulting in the death of her four dogs. Neighbor and U.S. Navy veteran Jackie Ramos attempted a rescue, but the fire's intensity made it impossible. The Daytona Beach Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire. In response, the community, led by Debbie Kruck Forrester of Ormond Strong, is supporting Sprague through a GoFundMe campaign, recognizing her contributions to fellow veterans and her love for animals.

The Halifax River Yacht Club is once again delighted to organize the Annual Christmas Boat Parade, a cherished tradition in the local boating community that brings families and friends together during the Holiday Season.

This event's success relies heavily on sponsorships and donations from local businesses and community members. We are actively seeking sponsors and contributions, either monetary or in the form of items for the Captains bags or prizes. Sponsors and donors will receive recognition in all our online promotional activities. It's important to note that all funds and prizes received are solely for the parade and do not benefit the Halifax River Yacht Club. For more details, please follow the provided link.

Participation in the parade is open to everyone, not just members of the HRYC. There is a nominal entry fee of $20, but for first-time participants, this fee is waived. To enter, simply click on the link below to access and print the entry form. The parade will commence north of the Seabreeze Bridge, with boats gathering at 5:45 p.m. for a 6 p.m. start. Further information about the parade route and other specifics will be updated as available.

Can Trackers Like Air Tags Solve Property Crimes?

Bluetooth tracking devices, such as Apple AirTags and Tiles, originally designed for personal use, are now aiding law enforcement in property crime investigations. These devices have been instrumental in many cases where they helped recover stolen items. Several law enforcement agencies report a rise in property crimes and have successfully used AirTags in several cases. However, the use of these trackers in law enforcement is subject to legal and investigative constraints. Despite these challenges, the technology has proven effective in some instances, leading to arrests and recovery of stolen goods.

Hull’s Seafood

Courtesy - National Fisherman

For nearly five decades, Captain Jimmy Hull has been a stalwart figure in Ormond Beach's fishing community. His career, spanning 47 years, is a tapestry of diverse roles: from harvesting fish and crabs to running a successful seafood market and restaurant. At 68, Hull, the recipient of the 2023 National Fisherman Highliner Award, reflects on a life dedicated to the sea and its bounty.

Hull's journey began in his youth, navigating the waters of northeast Florida's Ponce Inlet. By 18, he had earned his U.S. Coast Guard captain's license, a significant milestone that paved the way for his future endeavors. His early years were marked by learning from seasoned captains and eventually owning his fishing boat at 20.

His career took a turn towards entrepreneurship when he purchased a small, closed fish market in Ormond Beach. Hull transformed this venture into Hull Seafood Market and Restaurant, a thriving hub with 125 employees, four commercial boats, and accolades from the U.S. Senate and the Florida Governor's office.

Despite his business success, Hull remains deeply connected to fishing, actively participating in various species' capture. His commitment extends beyond the boat; he's been instrumental in shaping fisheries management and conservation efforts, working with scientists and serving on influential panels and advisory committees.

However, Hull voices concerns about the future of commercial fishing, highlighting challenges like unfair allocations and the decline of working waterfronts. He advocates for a balanced approach to fisheries management, emphasizing the need for fair representation and accountability.

As he continues to navigate these waters, Hull's legacy is marked by his dedication to his craft, his community, and the environment.
