Cloudy, Windy, 80% Chance of Rain

Expect breezy conditions with an 80% chance of rain, including scattered showers and some heavy rain from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Morning temperatures will be in the 60s, rising to upper 60s to low 70s in the afternoon. Winds will be from the ENE at 10-15 mph, with stronger gusts. Rain will transition to showers later in the day. There's a potential for heavy rainfall continuing through Thursday night, with isolated thunderstorms also possible. Coastal areas should be aware of a Gale Warning, Tidal Flooding, Rough Surf, and Rip currents.

Looking forward to Friday, expect scattered showers in the early hours, then clearing to partly cloudy skies. The weekend is set to be sunnier.

Sovereign Citizen Claims Fail in Volusia County Arrests

Destry Wogerman and Laralynne Nabozny, identifying as sovereign citizens, were arrested in Volusia County. The incident began with a traffic stop due to Wogerman's unusual license plate. Wogerman, instead of providing a driver's license, handed over papers to deputies and was on a call with Nabozny, who later arrived and was also arrested. Attorney Michael Panella noted the ineffectiveness of sovereign citizens' legal arguments, which often lead to confrontations in court. Charges included driving without a license, operating an unregistered vehicle, and resisting deputies.

Parents and School District Alarmed by Proximity of Proposed Fuel Farm to Schools

The superintendent of Volusia County Schools has officially communicated the district's concerns regarding the proposed fuel farm in Ormond Beach. The letter, recently publicized, points out the proximity of many schools to the proposed site and the risks in case of a natural disaster. Parents share these concerns, noting the limited evacuation routes and potential for being cut off from schools. Belvedere Terminals responded by committing to safety and state-of-the-art measures.

Travis Sargent Announces Bid for Second Term as Ormond Beach City Commissioner

Travis Sargent, a veteran and insurance professional, is seeking a second term as Ormond Beach City Commissioner for Zone 2. His first term saw progress in technology updates for city operations and opposition to the Belvedere Terminals fuel farm. Sargent's future goals include automating City Hall processes to save money, reducing environmental pollutants, and continuing his commitment to transparency. He is currently the only candidate for the Zone 2 position in the 2024 elections.

Florida Schools to Use PragerU's Conservative Videos Amid Controversy

Florida leads a growing number of states in adopting PragerU videos for educational purposes, despite concerns over their conservative bias and accuracy. PragerU, a conservative nonprofit, offers videos on various topics, but critics argue they present a distorted view of history and facts. The controversy centers around videos like the one featuring Frederick Douglass, accused of misrepresenting his views. While Florida's Department of Education has approved these videos, scholars and educators question their suitability for school curricula, citing their partisan nature and oversimplification of complex issues.

Hull’s Seafood

For nearly five decades, Captain Jimmy Hull has been a stalwart figure in Ormond Beach's fishing community. His career, spanning 47 years, is a tapestry of diverse roles: from harvesting fish and crabs to running a successful seafood market and restaurant. At 68, Hull, the recipient of the 2023 National Fisherman Highliner Award, reflects on a life dedicated to the sea and its bounty.

Hull's journey began in his youth, navigating the waters of northeast Florida's Ponce Inlet. By 18, he had earned his U.S. Coast Guard captain's license, a significant milestone that paved the way for his future endeavors. His early years were marked by learning from seasoned captains and eventually owning his fishing boat at 20.

His career took a turn towards entrepreneurship when he purchased a small, closed fish market in Ormond Beach. Hull transformed this venture into Hull Seafood Market and Restaurant, a thriving hub with 125 employees, four commercial boats, and accolades from the U.S. Senate and the Florida Governor's office.

Despite his business success, Hull remains deeply connected to fishing, actively participating in various species' capture. His commitment extends beyond the boat; he's been instrumental in shaping fisheries management and conservation efforts, working with scientists and serving on influential panels and advisory committees.

However, Hull voices concerns about the future of commercial fishing, highlighting challenges like unfair allocations and the decline of working waterfronts. He advocates for a balanced approach to fisheries management, emphasizing the need for fair representation and accountability.

As he continues to navigate these waters, Hull's legacy is marked by his dedication to his craft, his community, and the environment.
