Our Thoughts About Thanksgiving

Thinking about the modern day celebration of Thanksgiving Day, when everyone's "thanks" are mostly for their current blessings, it occurs to us that most people do not stop long enough to consider how we got where we are in 2023. They're waiting for 5am Friday for the Black Friday sales. Let's examine who we should be thankful for.

Just up the road from Ormond Beach, St. Augustine, founded in 1565 is the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the United States. Forty-two years before the English colonized Jamestown and fifty-five years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, the Spanish established at St. Augustine this nation's first enduring settlement.

The Jamestown Colony, founded on May 14, 1607, was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. The settlers, led by Captain John Smith, faced immediate challenges. The site they chose was marshy, lacked fresh water, and was vulnerable to attacks from the Powhatan Confederacy. The early years of Jamestown were marked by extreme hardship, known as the "Starving Time" during the winter of 1609-1610. The settlers dealt with famine, disease, and conflicts with indigenous peoples. It is said that only 40% of the settlers survived the first year. Despite these adversities, the colony survived, largely due to the cultivation of tobacco, introduced by John Rolfe in 1612. This cash crop became the economic backbone of the colony, attracting more settlers and ensuring its sustainability.

The story of the Pilgrims begins in September 1620, when a group of English Separatists embarked from Plymouth, England, on the Mayflower, a 100-foot sailing ship with 102 passengers and a crew of about 30–40 in extremely cramped conditions. They were seeking religious freedom and a new life, so they set their sights on the New World. After a treacherous 66-day journey across the Atlantic, they anchored near Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination in the Virginia Colony.

On December 21, 1620, they established Plymouth Colony in present-day Massachusetts. The first winter was brutal; nearly half of the settlers perished due to harsh conditions and disease. Despite these hardships, the survivors persevered. With assistance from indigenous peoples like Squanto and the Wampanoag tribe, the Pilgrims learned to cultivate the land, leading to a successful harvest in 1621. This event is often romanticized as the "First Thanksgiving," a symbol of cooperation between the settlers and Native Americans.

The decision to leave their homeland was not taken lightly by these early settlers. They faced daunting ocean voyages across the Atlantic, which were fraught with danger. Storms, disease, and limited supplies were constant threats. Some lost their lives at sea. Upon arrival, the challenges continued. The settlers had to adapt to an unfamiliar land, build shelters, secure food sources, and navigate complex relationships with indigenous peoples. They left behind friends, family, and possessions, knowing they might never see their homeland again. This leap into the unknown required immense courage and a strong belief in the promise of a better life.

Reflecting on the sacrifices of these early settlers, it is clear that their resilience and determination laid the foundations of what would become the United States. Their experiences in Plymouth and Jamestown set precedents for self-governance, as seen in the Mayflower Compact and the establishment of the House of Burgesses in Virginia, the first legislative assembly in the Americas.

Their courage in facing the unknown and their perseverance in the face of adversity are foundational to the American story. So as we celebrate this Thanksgiving Day, it is essential to recognize the depth of their sacrifices and the bravery of their journey. Their pursuit of freedom and a better life is a testament to the human spirit and a reminder of the values upon which the United States was built.

One wonders how many of us would be willing to suffer the sacrifices made by these settlers. Could we muster the needed manpower to face a determined enemy? Are we willing to stand for what we know is right. We're not so sure. It is time for all of us to speak out and take a stand not only for ourselves, but mainly our children and grandchildren. We need to have a serious talk with our young people about the realities of the history of our great country, the good, bad and the ugly. But the real truth. So in our thanks today we should include all those mentioned above and acknowledge their sacrifices for our benefit.
