Ormond Beach Chamber Welcomes Eva Connors McMullin as New Chair

Eva Connors McMullin was recently appointed as the new chair of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, a role her mother held 40 years ago. She aims to drive business growth and community collaboration. McMullin received the 2023 leadership award for her extensive involvement in chamber activities and community service. The chamber's annual banquet also honored Jeff Gilster, Diane Larsen, and Carlene Despard for their community contributions.

Under McMullin's leadership, the chamber will continue focusing on its strategic plan, including membership engagement and workforce development. Despite some business closures, the chamber has seen growth in membership and retention. The chamber also launched a new website and formed a workforce committee.

The 2024 executive committee and board of directors were announced, with a focus on mission-driven events. The chamber has taken positions on local issues like the dog-friendly beach program and opposition to the Belvedere Terminals fuel farm project. McMullin's leadership in opposing the fuel farm project was particularly highlighted by Mayor Bill Partington, emphasizing her commitment to community welfare.

Historic Florida Theater in Bunnell to Rise from the Ashes

Credit: Flagler County Fire Rescue

The historic Florida Theater in Bunnell, home to the Flagler Playhouse, was severely damaged by a fire three months ago. Flagler Playhouse President Jerri Berry described the event as surreal and unforgettable.

Recovery efforts are underway, with electricity restoration marking the start of the clean-up phase. The annex and back buildings are being converted into a smaller venue for hosting shows. The main theater, however, suffered extensive damage, with a collapsed roof and debris. The community is keen on preserving the historical aspects of the theater in the rebuilding process. The total restoration cost and insurance coverage are still uncertain, but there is hope for a positive outcome.

Meanwhile, the Playhouse has relocated its productions to the Pirate Theater at Matanzas High School and Bunnell Elementary.

Volusia County Files Motion to Disqualify GrayRobinson in Belvedere Fuel Terminals Case

Citing a potential conflict of interest, Volusia County filed a motion today, Jan. 26, to disqualify GrayRobinson from representing Belvedere Terminals in a lawsuit against the County.

GrayRobinson has served as the general counsel for the Volusia Growth Management Commission, the agency responsible for approving County and municipal comprehensive plan amendments, since 1986. In the motion, Volusia County argues that GrayRobinson's representation of Belvedere Terminals conflicts with its duty to provide unbiased counsel to the Volusia Growth Management Commission as the legal firm is concurrently challenging the County's land development authority and the firm's dual role compromises the impartiality required in reviewing the County's submissions to the VGMC.

The conflict is further highlighted by accusations from Belvedere and GrayRobinson alleging the County's violation of the comprehensive plan and bad faith that could bias the Volusia Growth Management Commission decision-making process while GrayRobinson is concurrently serving as an advisor. Volusia County’s motion emphasizes the importance of maintaining and respecting the integrity of the legal process and public trust, especially given concerns raised over GrayRobinson's simultaneous representation and the agency’s ability to legally and dutifully serve two potentially opposing clients.

Get Ready For A New Italian Restaurant Concept on February 1st!

In Ormond Beach, a new culinary experience is beginning on February 1, 2024 at 11am: Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen. This innovative restaurant is redefining the Italian dining experience, offering homemade pasta and sauces in a quick, casual, and affordable setting. It's a concept that bridges the gap between the luxury of high-end Italian eateries and the convenience of everyday dining.

At Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen, the focus is on delivering the rich, authentic flavors of American-Italian cuisine without the hefty price tag or the long wait. Imagine savoring dishes that you'd typically find in upscale Italian restaurants, but in a relaxed atmosphere where you can unwind with a glass of wine or a cold beer. The menu boasts not just exquisite pasta but also locally baked desserts and authentic Gelato, available for both dine-in and carryout.

The management team, led by Owner Phil Martin, Manager Schuyler O’Brien, and Chef Jeffrey Miller, has a combined experience of 70 years, and is committed to creating a unique dining experience in today's post-COVID economy. Their immediate goal is crystal clear: 100% customer satisfaction. They aim to achieve this through exceptional service and flawless execution of a business model that resonates with today's consumer.

L-R: Chef Jeff Miller, Mgr Schuyler O’Brien

Phil Martin, a dedicated member of local Rotary clubs and a community volunteer for 20 years, ensures that the restaurant will serve its local customers and community with pride. Many of the vendors are local, featuring items like local bakery cakes, gelato, and Ormand Brewery beers on tap.

The restaurant's philosophy is simple: to make fresh pasta and wine an everyday indulgence. The menu, crafted with 100% Italian Semolina flour, offers a blend of traditional sauces and American favorites. Everything is prepared fresh, with no microwaves or deep fryers in sight. The selection extends to salads, panini sandwiches, and homemade soups.

Ordering at Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen is a breeze. Guests can select their favorite wine while perusing the menu, order at the counter, and then relax as the friendly staff delivers food tableside or packages it for takeaway. The restaurant also caters to families, offering generous family-sized portions for carryout and catering.

Looking ahead, the team at Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen aspires to bring their unique dining concept to DeLand and other parts of Volusia County through manageable, conservative growth.

In summary, Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen is not just a restaurant; it's a culinary revolution. It's where quality meets convenience, where community ties are strengthened, and where every meal is an affordable luxury. Welcome to the new era of Italian dining!

Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen is located at 175 S. Nova Rd Ormond Beach (the former Blau location). You can contact them at 386-236-9164 or email at [email protected]. Check out the menu at CavatelliPastaKitchen.com. See you there!
