Global Audience Descends on Daytona for Prestigious Rolex 24 Race

Credit: NASCAR

The 62nd annual Rolex 24 race is set to began yesterday in Daytona Beach. The race attracts a global group of fans to Volusia County and the Daytona International Speedway. The event is eagerly anticipated by fans like Audrey Kabinoff and her son Hendrick, who look forward to the diverse cultural experience it offers. Local businesses are preparing for the influx of visitors, expecting a boost in sales.

Justine Knight, owner of Treats & Sweets Cakery, is participating in the Taste of the 24, a culinary event linked to the race that supports the NASCAR Foundation. This will be the third year her team is involved, and they plan to make 3,000 cupcakes for the event, which has already sold out its 1,800 tickets. Knight anticipates a significant increase in business both during and after the event.

Little Italy's Ristorante, co-owned by Mario Recupido, is also participating in the Taste of the 24, offering sample sizes of their entrees. The restaurant is experiencing a surge in customers, with packed crowds and a fast-paced atmosphere reminiscent of the race itself.

Dexter Scott King, Bearing His Father's Legacy, Passes Away at 62

Dexter Scott King, the youngest son of civil rights icons the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, passed away at 62 due to prostate cancer. His death was confirmed by the King Center in Atlanta, where he served as chairman. Dexter King died in his Malibu home, with his wife stating he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Dexter King's life was deeply affected by his father's assassination in 1968 when he was only seven. He turned his personal tragedy into a lifelong commitment to activism, embodying his parents' dream for civil rights and equality. His efforts were acknowledged by civil rights figures like the Rev. Al Sharpton.

In his memoir, "Growing Up King," Dexter King detailed the impact of his father's death on his life, discussing the challenges of maintaining resilience. He also portrayed his father in a 2002 TV movie about Rosa Parks, showcasing his physical resemblance to the civil rights leader.

Dexter King's death is mourned by his family, including his wife, brother, sister, and niece. His passing follows that of his mother in 2006 and his older sister in 2007. The King family has expressed their profound grief and requested prayers and privacy. A memorial service will be organized by the King Center, with details to be announced later.

Final Call for Goodwill Loyalty Points in Central Florida Stores

Goodwill Industries of Central Florida, Inc. is set to end its Loyalty Rewards Program in thrift stores on January 31, 2024. The program, which allows customers to earn points for purchases redeemable for future discounts, will no longer accept new sign-ups, and existing points must be used by March 31, 2024. The change affects various counties in Central Florida, although not all locations offer the loyalty program.

No explicit reason has been given for the program's discontinuation, but the organization's website suggests the possibility of new initiatives to improve the shopping experience. This change is part of a series of modifications at Goodwill stores nationwide, including price increases, stricter return policies, and the removal of dressing rooms due to various operational challenges.

Goodwill Industries, a nonprofit founded in 1902, is dedicated to providing job training and employment services, particularly for veterans and individuals with disabilities. It operates through a network of thrift stores under local organizations, with the Goodwill Florida Association encompassing several regional groups.

Get Ready For A New Italian Restaurant Concept on February 1st!

In Ormond Beach, a new culinary experience is beginning on February 1, 2024 at 11am: Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen. This innovative restaurant is redefining the Italian dining experience, offering homemade pasta and sauces in a quick, casual, and affordable setting. It's a concept that bridges the gap between the luxury of high-end Italian eateries and the convenience of everyday dining.

At Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen, the focus is on delivering the rich, authentic flavors of American-Italian cuisine without the hefty price tag or the long wait. Imagine savoring dishes that you'd typically find in upscale Italian restaurants, but in a relaxed atmosphere where you can unwind with a glass of wine or a cold beer. The menu boasts not just exquisite pasta but also locally baked desserts and authentic Gelato, available for both dine-in and carryout.

The management team, led by Owner Phil Martin, Manager Schuyler O’Brien, and Chef Jeffrey Miller, has a combined experience of 70 years, and is committed to creating a unique dining experience in today's post-COVID economy. Their immediate goal is crystal clear: 100% customer satisfaction. They aim to achieve this through exceptional service and flawless execution of a business model that resonates with today's consumer.

Phil Martin, a dedicated member of local Rotary clubs and a community volunteer for 20 years, ensures that the restaurant will serve its local customers and community with pride. Many of the vendors are local, featuring items like local bakery cakes, gelato, and Ormand Brewery beers on tap.

The restaurant's philosophy is simple: to make fresh pasta and wine an everyday indulgence. The menu, crafted with 100% Italian Semolina flour, offers a blend of traditional sauces and American favorites. Everything is prepared fresh, with no microwaves or deep fryers in sight. The selection extends to salads, panini sandwiches, and homemade soups.

Ordering at Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen is a breeze. Guests can select their favorite wine while perusing the menu, order at the counter, and then relax as the friendly staff delivers food tableside or packages it for takeaway. The restaurant also caters to families, offering generous family-sized portions for carryout and catering.

Looking ahead, the team at Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen aspires to bring their unique dining concept to DeLand and other parts of Volusia County through manageable, conservative growth.

In summary, Cavatelli Pasta Kitchen is not just a restaurant; it's a culinary revolution. It's where quality meets convenience, where community ties are strengthened, and where every meal is an affordable luxury. Welcome to the new era of Italian dining!
