Hurricane Center to Expand Forecasting Tool to Inland Areas in Wake of Ian's Devastation
GOES Satellite Image of Hurricane Ian
The National Hurricane Center is set to introduce a significant update to its hurricane forecasting tool by expanding the "cone of uncertainty" to cover inland areas. This new, experimental graphic, expected to be launched in mid-August, aims to address the risks of wind and flooding hazards that affect regions beyond the coastlines. The enhancement comes in the wake of Hurricane Ian's devastating impact in 2022, which resulted in significant inland damage and 149 deaths in Florida.
The updated forecast cone will feature color coding to delineate areas at risk more effectively, ensuring that residents, regardless of their proximity to the coast, are aware of potential dangers. This move reflects an acknowledgment of the increasing severity of hurricanes, attributed in part to climate change effects like rising sea levels, leading to more intense storms and flooding.
Hurricane Ian's passage through Florida, causing widespread damage and flooding across central regions, has underscored the need for more inclusive forecasting tools. The hurricane center's initiative aims to provide clearer guidance to inland communities about the risks posed by hurricanes, enhancing preparedness and response efforts. The 2023 season saw 20 named storms, with Hurricane Idalia notably affecting the U.S. coastline and inland areas.
Property Values in Volusia County Double, Setting New Records for Fourth Consecutive Year
In 2023, Volusia County's property values hit a new peak of $97.7 billion, marking a significant 15.2% increase from the previous year and setting a record for the fourth straight year. This growth reflects a vibrant real estate market, with homeowners like those represented by Shatawna Evans looking to capitalize on the doubling values of properties like a three-bedroom home in Port Orange, now listed for $535,000.
The county's real estate strength is partly due to new developments and an increase in taxable land parcels, now over 357,000, driven by demand for housing and commercial spaces. Developments like Latitude Margaritaville contribute to this trend, with its rapid sales indicating a strong market for both new and existing homes. The median sale price for homes has also surged, further evidence of Volusia County's booming real estate sector. Realtors remain optimistic, citing active interest in listings as a sign of a healthy market poised for continued growth.
Seabreeze Cheerleaders Leap to State Semifinals Amid Challenges
During the FHSAA Region 2 competitive cheerleading tournament at Hagerty High School, the Seabreeze Sandcrabs cheerleading team showcased their talent and resilience, securing a place in the State Championship Class 1A semifinals with a score of 63.50. Despite facing significant challenges, including adjustments to their routine due to injuries, the team's performance was a testament to their hard work and determination. The Seabreeze team, under the guidance of head coach Megan Lambert, has been recognized for their fighting spirit throughout the season, overcoming illness and injuries to become the top-scoring team in their region and class.
The team's captain, Lyla Roberson, highlighted the importance of adaptability and execution, acknowledging the team's skill level but also recognizing areas for improvement following their regional performance. Meanwhile, Mainland's cheerleading team, despite not advancing to the state championships, reflected positively on their season, with coach Jenece Giddens emphasizing the growth and passion for cheerleading that emerged among her athletes.
As the Seabreeze team looks ahead to the state championships, their focus is on unity, support, and striving for excellence, aiming to elevate their performance and achieve their best on the state stage.
Why Dog Shampoo Can Be Dangerous for Cats: Understanding the Risks
In the nuanced world of pet care, the importance of using species-specific grooming products cannot be overstated. This principle is particularly crucial when it comes to bathing our feline friends, who, despite their self-grooming prowess, occasionally require human intervention for a thorough clean. Experts warn against the use of dog shampoo on cats, highlighting the potential risks to their health and well-being due to fundamental differences in skin pH levels and sensitivity to certain ingredients.
Cats and dogs have distinct pH levels, necessitating tailored grooming formulas to maintain their skin's natural balance and integrity. Dog skin, more alkaline, has a pH around 7.52, while cat skin is more acidic, with a pH near 6.43. Using a shampoo designed for dogs can disrupt the acidic environment of a cat's skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and increased susceptibility to infections.
The disparity in ingredient tolerance between the two species further complicates the issue. Dog shampoos often contain substances like permethrin, pyrethrin, and tea tree oil, which, while beneficial for dogs, can be toxic or even fatal to cats. Other common additives, such as certain essential oils and fragrances, may cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, or respiratory issues in cats. Additionally, products containing isopropyl alcohol, though occasionally found in pet care items, are notably harsh and drying.
Given these considerations, pet owners are advised to seek alternatives that are safe for cats. While not ideal, baby shampoo, castile soap, and Dawn dish soap can serve as temporary solutions in the absence of cat-specific products, provided they are used sparingly and rinsed thoroughly. Baking soda offers a non-toxic option for dry grooming, and specially formulated pet wet wipes and waterless shampoos present convenient, gentle alternatives for keeping cats clean without the stress of a traditional bath.
Ultimately, the safest choice for bathing cats is a shampoo with a pH level tailored to their specific skin requirements, ideally between 6 and 6.5. By prioritizing products designed for feline use, pet owners can ensure their cats' grooming needs are met without compromising their health.
