Daytona Beach International Airport Surpasses Pre-Pandemic Passenger Numbers in 2023

Credit: DAB Website

Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by surpassing its pre-pandemic passenger traffic numbers from 2019. With a total of 719,775 passengers, the airport saw a slight increase over the 2019 figure and a notable rise in overall capacity, indicating a strong recovery and expansion in its operations.

The introduction of Avelo Airlines, alongside the continued service from Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, has broadened the airport's offerings. Efforts to enhance service and increase flight frequencies, including the resumption of seasonal flights to key destinations, reflect the airport's commitment to growth and the optimistic outlook for continued increases in passenger numbers.

Storm Center: Central Florida Faces Marginal Risk of Severe Storms

Credit: Radar Omega - Forecast Sunday-1pm

Central Florida is on alert as a frontal system from the Gulf Coast is set to bring rainy conditions, breezy winds, and precipitation to the region early Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a marginal risk (1/5) for severe storms, leading to the declaration of an Impact Day. Expected impacts include heavy rain, gusts up to 35 mph, lightning, and a possible isolated tornado.

Despite the severe weather threat, temperatures will remain mild, with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. The weather is expected to stabilize somewhat by Monday, though chances for showers will persist. Residents are urged to stay prepared and keep umbrellas close by through the start of the week.

New Hope for Florida Growers Battling Invasive Thrips Pest

Credit: Daniel Carrillo-UF/IFAS

Since its emergence in Central Florida in 2020, the invasive thrips parvispinus has wreaked havoc on a wide array of crops, leading to significant economic losses.
Alexandra Revynthi of UF/IFAS has led research into identifying effective insecticides against this pest, culminating in a study that offers a list of conventional and biorational options. The study, which aims to provide growers with environmentally friendly solutions for pest control, evaluated the efficacy of 32 insecticides against the thrips.
Preliminary results show promise in killing or deterring the pests, with further validation needed. Revynthi's work underscores the importance of sustainable pest management practices to combat the financial and ecological impacts of the thrips parvispinus in Florida.
