Generous Donation Paves the Way for Dog-Friendly Beaches in Volusia County
In a significant development for dog lovers and beachgoers in Volusia County, a new "dogs on the beach" pilot program has been launched, thanks to a generous donation from a local philanthropist. The program, which began on November 1, 2023, marks a pivotal moment for the community, allowing dogs on a designated half-mile stretch of beach in Ormond Beach, from Rockefeller Drive to Milsap Road.
The initiative was made possible by Nancy Lohman, a longtime resident of Ormond Beach and a known philanthropist, who donated $100,000 to the county. This substantial financial contribution was aimed at covering the operational costs of the program, including the salaries and equipment for two part-time animal control officers who will ensure compliance with the program's rules and regulations.
According to sources, Lohman and her husband were concerned that the financial burden of initiating such a program might prevent its approval. In an effort to remove this obstacle, they reached out to Volusia County Council Vice Chair Troy Kent with their offer to donate the necessary funds.
The initiative has been met with positive feedback from the community, with many expressing joy at the opportunity to enjoy the beach alongside their canine companions.
Looking forward, Lohman expressed her hope that the program will not only continue beyond its pilot phase but also expand to cover more of Volusia County's 47 miles of beach. This sentiment is shared by many in the community who see the program as an enhancement of the beachgoing experience for families and their pets.
The county is currently seeking applicants for the two part-time animal control officer positions, with requirements including being over the age of 18 and possessing a GED or high school diploma, along with previous experience with animals.
Raising Cane's to Debut in Volusia County with New Daytona Beach Location
Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, a popular restaurant chain celebrated for its fresh, never-frozen chicken tenders and distinctive crinkle-cut fries, is set to open its first Volusia County location in Daytona Beach. This new addition to the local dining scene will occupy a 3,267-square-foot space at the southwest corner of International Speedway and Williamson Boulevards, taking over the site of the former Pier 1 Imports.
The upcoming Daytona Beach outlet will feature a sizeable 3,200-square-foot layout and is designed to accommodate patrons with two drive-thru lanes, enhancing convenience and accessibility. While officials have yet to announce a specific opening date, the anticipation among local food enthusiasts is palpable.
Raising Cane's is renowned for its commitment to quality, offering hand-battered fried chicken tenders paired with its signature Cane’s sauce, which has garnered a dedicated following. The sauce, notable for its unique flavor, can be ordered by the cup, allowing diners to indulge in their preference for extra dipping.
The chain's expansion into Florida was announced in 2022, with plans to open 25 new restaurants throughout the Sunshine State, including 12 in Central Florida. To date, Raising Cane's has successfully established 15 locations across Florida, with three of these in the Orlando area, signaling a growing presence and popularity within the state.
Change Your Password Day: A Step Towards Advanced Online Safety
As digital platforms become central to managing personal and financial information, the critical role of passwords in safeguarding digital identities is increasingly emphasized. Experts advocate for the creation of strong, unique passphrases for each online account to enhance security. With the recent observance of Change Your Password Day (February 1), there is a push towards adopting more sophisticated security measures, such as password managers and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), signaling a shift away from traditional password reliance.
Simultaneously, Safer Internet Day, to be celebrated on February 6, aims to raise awareness about online risks, including cyberbullying and misinformation, in the context of a society deeply intertwined with digital technology. The growing influence of artificial intelligence and machine learning introduces new complexities to online safety, underscoring the need for continuous education and vigilance.
Experts encourage individuals to actively seek advice and support in navigating the digital realm, highlighting the value of cyber-mentors and community resources. The overarching message is a call to action for individuals to contribute to a safer internet by being proactive in seeking guidance and staying informed about emerging technologies and threats.
