Forecasters Eye La Niña Development, Warn of Enhanced Hurricane Risk

Atlantic Ocean Heat Graphic: NOAA

The Climate Prediction Center has issued a La Niña watch, indicating a 55% to 74% chance of the phenomenon developing from early summer through October, potentially influencing the Atlantic hurricane season. This forecast follows the decline of an El Niño phase that suppresses hurricanes. La Niña is associated with reduced Atlantic wind shear, allowing easier formation and strengthening of tropical cyclones, amid concerns over record-high Atlantic temperatures. However, experts, including those from Colorado State University and the University of Miami, caution that it's too early for precise predictions, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of climate patterns like La Niña and El Niño within the broader El Niño-Southern Oscillation.
