Community Input Sought for Volusia's Beach Strengthening Initiative

In response to severe coastal erosion from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, the Volusia County Council approved a Beach Feasibility Assessment by Taylor Engineering, funded by a $462,655 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
This summer, the county and Taylor Engineering will seek public input through meetings and a digital survey to inform future beach management. The assessment will analyze shoreline trends, erosion rates, and the impact of infrastructure on the coastline to identify critical areas for intervention. It aims to develop a comprehensive coastal management plan, focusing on both structural and ecological solutions to ensure the long-term resilience of Volusia County's beaches.

Flapjack Johnny's Casualty of Rising Costs and Lease Issues

Photo: Google Business Profile

Flapjack Johnny's, a popular breakfast spot in Ormond Beach, has closed after six years of operation due to increasing costs and lease disagreements with the landlord. The closure was announced through a sign on the restaurant's door, thanking patrons and staff for their support. The eatery had occupied the space at 165 N. Yonge Street since early 2018, previously the site of the Liberty Grill. Flapjack Johnny's also had locations in Orlando and Port Orange, with the latter already closed. Efforts to obtain comments from the restaurant's representatives were unsuccessful.

Florida Gasoline Prices Fall Amidst Roller Coaster Price Profile

In Florida, gasoline prices have decreased notably, showing a 9-cent drop last week, marking a consistent 10-day decrease in prices. This recent trend brought the average price down from $3.23 to $3.14 per gallon. According to AAA-The Auto Club Group, this pattern of price changes is typical, with prices generally decreasing for about two weeks before rising sharply again. The statement from Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA, suggests that this trend, coupled with a recent increase in futures prices, indicates that prices are likely to surge, potentially as early as Monday afternoon. This prediction follows after a noticeable rise in the price of U.S. crude oil, which went up by almost $5 per barrel, and gas futures, which saw an increase of nearly 20 cents per gallon.

The fluctuation in gasoline prices varies across different metropolitan areas in Florida. The areas with the highest gas prices include West Palm Beach-Boca Raton at $3.34 per gallon, Naples at $3.24, and Fort Lauderdale at $3.22. Conversely, the least expensive metro markets for gasoline are Panama City at $2.93 per gallon, Crestview-Fort Walton Beach at $2.99, and Pensacola at $3.04.

USDA Warns Against Consumption of Certain Meat and Poultry Due to Contamination Risk

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a public health alert for meat and poultry products containing dairy ingredients from Rizo-Lopez Foods, which have been recalled previously due to potential Listeria contamination. The alert advises against the consumption of these products, marked with the USDA inspection symbol, and comes after establishments reported using the contaminated dairy in their products. While no illnesses have been reported, listeriosis poses a significant risk, especially to vulnerable groups. Consumers and retailers in possession of these products are urged to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
