Local Food Bank Becomes Lifeline as Economic Strains Deepen in Volusia and Flagler

Stock Photo

Volusia and Flagler counties are experiencing a significant increase in food insecurity, exacerbated by the reduction of federal pandemic aid. Over 40% of residents are financially strained, struggling to afford both rent and food.

The Jerry Doliner Food Bank, supported by the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties, has become a critical resource, offering weekly food distributions to families in need. With the demand for assistance surging, community efforts, including a forthcoming Food Insecurity Fund, aim to provide essential support to those affected. Volunteers and donations are crucial in sustaining these lifelines for the community.

Information for each of more than 50 agencies includes how to apply, fees, languages, hours, locations, and contact information.

Millennials Poised for Real Estate Windfall in Historic Wealth Transfer

Millennials are set to inherit a significant portion of America's real estate wealth from their baby boomer parents, marking a pivotal shift in wealth distribution. This "great wealth transfer," estimated at over $53 trillion, will notably increase millennials' stake in real estate, a sector where they currently own a small fraction. Despite challenges in homeownership due to high mortgage rates and low housing supply, millennials' overall assets have grown substantially. However, the wealth gap between generations remains wide, with boomers holding a vast majority of the nation's wealth. This dynamic is expected to change as millennials inherit their parents' assets, potentially reshaping the landscape of American wealth.

Ormond Beach Enhances Pedestrian Safety with Innovative Traffic Beacon

The Florida Department of Transportation has introduced a pedestrian hybrid beacon at the intersection of State Road A1A and Rockefeller Drive in Ormond Beach to improve pedestrian safety. This beacon, part of a larger $4.1 million safety enhancement project along A1A, activates to control traffic only when a pedestrian wishes to cross. The project also includes additional mid-block crossings and raised medians, with plans to install seven more crossings featuring rectangular rapid flashing beacons. These efforts are in response to the daily traffic of nearly 18,600 vehicles and aim to significantly enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists in the area.

Some Comments:

  • “The age limit is too high. Should limit social media to over 13. By 16, today’s teens are more like adults. They will find ways around the ban.”

  • “Parents need to control what their children are permitted to do not the state. It is impossible to monitor without violating freedoms granted to Americans via our constitution. Censorship of any kind is fascism in which today’s Republicans embrace. ”

  • “florida wants to be a nanny state in our home and school ”

  • “That is a parental decision not a governmental decision ”

  • “Difficult to police. ”
