From Aspiring Astronaut to Miss America, Madison Marsh Shares Her Story of Evolution with Hinson Students
Miss America 2024, Madison Marsh, visited Hinson Middle School to inspire students with her story of embracing change and following one's passions. Speaking to the AVID program participants, Marsh, also a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, emphasized the importance of being open to changing dreams and career paths.
She shared her personal journey from aspiring astronaut to public policy student at Harvard, influenced by her mother's death from pancreatic cancer. Marsh's visit, which precedes her role as Honorary Pace Car Driver at the DAYTONA 500, aimed to challenge stereotypes and encourage students to pursue their interests confidently. Deputy Superintendent Rachel Hazel praised Marsh as a role model for students, embodying the aspirations educators have for their charges.
Daytona 500 Spectators Advised to Prepare for Rainy Race Day
Rain Forecast Sunday - 3pm - Windy.com
As enthusiasts and spectators gear up for the iconic Daytona 500 this Sunday, they might want to consider packing an umbrella alongside their excitement. According to sources, a slow-moving cold front is set to sweep through Central Florida starting Saturday, bringing with it a blanket of widespread rain that is expected to persist into the morning of the race and possibly throughout the event.
The inclement weather, characterized by showers, is anticipated to coincide with the race's commencement at 2:30 p.m. and could extend into the evening hours. The trajectory and speed at which the front moves southward will play a crucial role in determining whether conditions might see an improvement as the race progresses. However, current trends are not particularly promising, with predictions indicating that the rain could continue through Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday.
There is a collective hope among organizers and fans alike that the weather pattern will accelerate over the next 36 hours, mitigating the impact of the rain on what is one of the most eagerly awaited events in the racing calendar. The situation remains fluid, and all involved are advised to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts as the weekend approaches.
Local Task Forces Arrest Fentanyl Dealer in Ormond Beach, Seize Drugs and Firearm
In a significant crackdown on the local drug trade, an East Volusia narcotics dealer was apprehended on Thursday, marking a victory for law enforcement agencies in their ongoing battle against the opioid crisis. The arrest of Dexter Tolbert, identified as a purveyor of fentanyl among other substances, was the culmination of an undercover operation spearheaded by the Volusia Sheriff's Office (VSO) Overdose Task Force in collaboration with the East Volusia Narcotics Task Force.
The operation, which unfolded at a Family Dollar store located at 780 S. Nova Road in Ormond Beach, was designed as a buy-bust scenario targeting Tolbert. However, upon realizing the trap, Tolbert attempted to flee the scene on foot. His efforts were in vain as he was quickly detained by officers a short distance from the initial encounter.
The search conducted in the aftermath of Tolbert's capture yielded approximately 3.5 grams of fentanyl and 5 grams of crack cocaine, alongside a loaded handgun ingeniously concealed beneath the steering wheel of his vehicle, attached by a magnet. This discovery underscores the dangerous nexus between drug trafficking and firearm possession among convicted felons.
Tolbert, who had only been released from prison in May after serving sentences for carjacking and armed robbery, now faces a slew of charges. These include the sale and possession of fentanyl with intent to sell, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, and several other related offenses. Following his arrest, he was remanded to the Volusia County Branch Jail, held without bond for the firearm and ammunition charges. This operation highlights the concerted efforts of the VSO Overdose Task Force and the East Volusia Narcotics Task Force—a coalition of local law enforcement agencies including the Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, Port Orange, South Daytona, Edgewater, and New Smyrna Beach Police Departments. These entities are dedicated to addressing the scourge of drug overdoses and the illicit drug trade plaguing Volusia County.
