92-Acre Controlled Burn Aims to Preserve Ecosystem Health in Volusia County
Courtesy: St. Johns River Water Management District
Yesterday the St. Johns River Water Management District recently carried out a 92-acre prescribed burn within the Heart Island Conservation Area in Volusia County, a strategic move aimed at wildfire prevention, reduction of natural fuel accumulations, and the control of shrub growth. This controlled burn, situated south of State Road 40 along the west side of Bee Road, was meticulously planned to ensure that wind and other prevailing weather conditions facilitated the effective management of the fire while also minimizing smoke-related impacts on local residents and traffic.
Prescribed burns are recognized by the district as a critical ecological tool, almost as vital as rainfall and sunshine, especially in fire-dependent ecosystems. The practice of conducting controlled burns brings multiple benefits, including the restoration and maintenance of natural ecosystems, a significant reduction in the likelihood of destructive wildfires, the support of fire-adapted flora and fauna, nutrient cycling, tree disease management, and the enhancement of scenic landscapes.
The district emphasizes the importance of these burns in maintaining the health and safety of the environment and local communities. For individuals interested in learning more about the prescribed burn program and its benefits, the St. Johns River Water Management District provides resources and information on their website, accessible at www.sjrwmd.com/lands/management/prescribedfire.

Mary’s journey to owning the River Lily Inn is one of passion and serendipity. Originally from London, Mary and Al sought retirement in the sunny climes of Florida. Their search led them to a magnificent Victorian estate for sale, which they instantly fell in love with. The estate's potential for hosting High Tea in Polly's Tea Room, doubling as a dining area for guests, was particularly appealing, given Mary's London roots. This inspired them to embark on the adventure of running a bed and breakfast, welcoming guests from all walks of life, each with their own stories to share.
