OBPD Enhances Fight Against Cyber Scams Amidst Elderly Exploitation

The Ormond Beach Police Department is facing an uptick in cryptocurrency scams, particularly targeting the elderly, with fraud cases on the rise. Victims have lost significant amounts of money through various schemes, including investment frauds and impersonation scams. The department is utilizing new software to better investigate these crimes, emphasizing the importance of public awareness and early reporting. The increase in cyber fraud represents a significant challenge, but the OBPD is committed to combating this threat through technology and community education.

Volusia sheriff’s detectives investigating the disappearance of a 16-year-old Ormond Beach girl almost 20 years ago discovered human remains this afternoon during the excavation of a suspected burial site.

The remains are believed to be those of Autumn Lane McClure, a Mainland High School student who was last seen May 10, 2004, when her boyfriend dropped her off at the Volusia Mall.

Sheriff’s detectives continued to investigate the case in the nearly 20 years that followed, obtaining DNA from family members, re-interviewing friends and possible witnesses, and identifying a person of interest in 2021. That person died in May 2022, but the investigation continued.

The investigation led to a suspected burial site in the Ormond Beach area. Today, human remains were discovered during excavation of the site.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood will provide a media briefing Thursday. Further information will be provided in that briefing and updated post.

Daytona Beach is facing a growing homelessness and panhandling crisis, particularly noticeable at the entrance of the Walgreens at Beville Road and Clyde Morris Boulevard and the adjacent shopping complex. The issue has been exacerbated by homeless encampments and a judicial order halting the enforcement of the city's panhandling ordinance. Efforts to address the situation are complicated by a lawsuit challenging the ordinance on constitutional grounds. As the city navigates the legal battle, it is working to dismantle homeless camps and address residents' concerns, highlighting the broader challenge of balancing individual rights with public safety and well-being.
