Volusia County to Debate 1999 Gun Show Regulation Repeal

The Volusia County Council is poised to reconsider a 1999 ordinance requiring a three-day waiting period and criminal background checks for firearm purchases on public property, a rule primarily affecting gun shows. This reconsideration follows a unanimous council vote to explore the ordinance's repeal, prompted by claims that it infringes on Second Amendment rights without effectively curbing violence. Council members and the public offered varied perspectives, from the ordinance's role in public safety to its impact on constitutional rights, reflecting the broader national debate on gun control.

Raising the Alarm on Encephalitis: A Former Councilwoman's Crusade for Awareness

Encephalitis, an often misunderstood condition resulting in brain inflammation, poses significant challenges, including a high mortality rate and severe, long-term disabilities for survivors. Dr. Ava Easton from Encephalitis International stresses the critical need for heightened awareness. Former Port Orange councilwoman Kat Atwood, alongside her husband Ken, has turned their personal battle with the disease into a broader campaign for education and support within their community. After a year-long quest for a diagnosis following Kat's unexpected seizure, they discovered she suffered from autoimmune encephalitis, a rare condition prompting her to resign from her council position and dedicate herself to raising awareness. Kat's story is not just one of personal struggle but of communal rallying and advocacy, especially leading up to World Encephalitis Day, as the Atwoods work to educate others and highlight the importance of support systems in facing such daunting diagnoses.
