Volusia County's Marine Science Center to Release Rehabilitated Sea Turtles into the Wild

The Marine Science Center in Volusia County is celebrating the rehabilitation and release of four juvenile green sea turtles on Tuesday, March 19, at 11 a.m., at the Beach Street Ponce Inlet. These turtles, each rescued within Volusia County and facing health issues ranging from neurologic symptoms to pneumonia, underwent extensive treatments. The public event highlights the center's commitment to marine conservation, inviting residents and visitors to participate. The center, which focuses on the welfare of turtles, reptiles, and seabirds, remains open to visitors several days a week.

From No Antibiotics Ever to NAIHM: Chick-Fil-A Adjusts Chicken Sourcing Strategy

Photo: Chick-Fil-A

Chick-Fil-A has adjusted its decade-long policy against the use of any antibiotics in its chicken supply, shifting towards a stance that avoids only those antibiotics critical for human health under the “no antibiotics important to human medicine” (NAIHM) standard. This decision reflects broader industry challenges and concerns over securing enough antibiotic-free chicken, with Tyson Foods also revising its antibiotic use policies due to animal welfare and health considerations. The change is part of a larger conversation on the impact of antibiotic use in livestock on public health and antibiotic resistance, marking a significant pivot in Chick-Fil-A's sourcing practices beginning spring 2024.

Solar Flare Sparks Geomagnetic Storm Watch, Possible Communications Disruptions

Ormond Local Pulse

NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado, has issued a warning for a geomagnetic storm lasting through Monday, caused by a plasma outburst from a recent solar flare. This event is expected to disrupt radio communications and enhance auroral displays, especially in higher latitudes. While high-frequency radio signals critical for aviation and satellite tracking may face interruptions, the effects on power grids are likely to be minimal. Forecaster Jonathan Lash emphasizes that such disturbances are typical during the solar maximum, a period of increased solar activity happening roughly every 11 years. He also suggests that this presents an excellent opportunity for aurora viewing, recalling the significant disruptions caused by a solar flare last December.

The Heartwarming Reason Your Dog Greets You With a Toy

Evie and Chester, two Cavoodle dogs, have highlighted a unique aspect of canine behavior by greeting their owners with toys in their mouths, a gesture that goes beyond mere playfulness to indicate complex emotional expressions. Dr. Wailani Sung explains that this behavior can signify a dog's way of showing affection, seeking attention, or managing overwhelming joy. This discovery not only sheds light on the emotional intelligence of dogs but also deepens the bond between pets and their owners, showcasing the nuanced ways in which animals communicate their love and attachment.

Steer-In-Burger Offers Fresh Meat and Hand Cut Fries

Along S. Nova Rd., David Martin, a seasoned entrepreneur with a rich history of businesses and adventures, including piloting his own plane around the globe, decided to settle down and open Steer In Burger. At 73, David embarked on transforming a space with bright orange and red walls and a black ceiling into the welcoming burger shop it is today. After months of DIY renovation from a Mexican restaurant, Steer In Burger opened its doors in April, 2023, offering a menu centered around freshness and quality, a realization David had after struggling to find good, fresh food in the area.

Delicious Burgers

Steer In Burger stands out not just for its freshly ground meat burgers and hand-cut fries, but also for its Philly cheesesteaks, vegetarian options, desserts, and a variety of drinks including beer, milkshakes, and root beer floats. David's commitment to the community shines through with "Family Day" every Tuesday offering $5 hamburgers $6 cheeseburgers and $2 hot dogs. Spend $50 you get a free churro . It’s dine in only and they do it to give families an opportunity to go out to eat.

Hand Cut Fries

So, nearly a year after opening, Steer In Burger has become a testament to Dave Martin’s lifelong journey and dedication. It's more than a burger joint; it's a reflection of his dreams and adventures, serving as a warm, inviting spot for the Ormond Beach community.

Steer-In-Burger is located at 663 S Nova Rd., Ormond Beach. You can reach them at 386-285-1544 or by email at [email protected]
