Ormond Beach Puts Overnight Docking Proposal on Hold Amid Park Redesign
The Ormond Beach City Commission has decided to delay a proposal from Ormond MainStreet for a six-month overnight docking trial at Cassen Park, citing the upcoming park redesign and concerns over safety and liability. Although there’s interest in the proposal, with plans to complete the park’s redesign by June 2025, commissioners believe the timing isn’t right. Safety concerns include the lack of lighting and security at the docks, as well as restricted bathroom access.
Mayor Bill Partington has encouraged discussing these issues with MainStreet for potential solutions, highlighting the city staff’s role in addressing and overcoming these challenges.

Jeff Brower Elected Chair of Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission

Volusia County Chair Jeff Brower has been elected chair of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission, which is composed of five local SunRail partners: Volusia, Seminole, Orange, and Osceola counties and the City of Orlando.
SunRail, a weekday commuter rail system that runs from DeBary to Poinciana, spans 49 miles and services 16 stations. This summer, a station will open in DeLand, adding 12.2 miles to the SunRail corridor.
Brower has served on the commission since 2021, most recently as vice chair.
“This is a critical time for Volusia County’s involvement with the Rail Commission as we negotiate and vote on the transition from FDOT funding to the partners funding operations and maintenance,” Brower said. “It will also be helpful as we prepare to open the DeLand SunRail Station which stands to be a beautiful addition to the system. As chair I will be able to plan the agenda with FDOT District 5 Secretary of Transportation John Tyler.”
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which has operated SunRail and paid its expenses since 2014, will continue to do so through Dec. 31. At that time, the local partners will take over operations and costs in phases.
Veteran Educator Reassigned Amidst Slur Scandal
In a controversy that's gripped Volusia County, Samantha Fuster, a former Cypress Creek Elementary School teacher, has been transferred to Holly Hill School amidst allegations of using derogatory language towards her fourth-grade students. Volusia County School officials launched an investigation following a parent's complaint about Fuster's conduct in February.
Although the investigation concluded on March 19, details remain under wraps. Fuster, with 17 years of teaching under her belt, was not dismissed but reassigned to provide math support across multiple grades. The incident, confirmed by parents, has stirred significant community concern, highlighting the delicate balance educators must maintain in disciplinary language.
