It is with heavy hearts that the City of Ormond Beach mourns the passing of a true community pillar, Michael R. Longfellow, who served diligently as our Chief of Police until his retirement in 2010. Michael was not only a devoted servant to the public but a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering integrity will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.

In celebration of Michael's life, we encourage donations to the UCF Foundation, Gene and Mary Longfellow Award, to support beginning teachers. Your generosity will honor Michael and his parents' commitment to community service and education.

Lennar Takes the Lead in Building Boom Amidst Market Melancholy

February saw the Volusia-Flagler housing market slow down with a 5.7% decrease in home sales and a 16.7% drop in condo and townhouse transactions. Despite a slight uptick in median home prices, high costs and low inventory continue to challenge buyers, even as mortgage rates start to dip. Lennar Homes has emerged as the new leading builder, outpacing D.R. Horton in new permits. In commercial real estate, notable sales include a $5.8 million deal for future Bojangles land and a $2.8 million Dunkin Donuts property sale. Kroger's experiment with a storeless grocery model in Florida faces setbacks, leading to layoffs.

Holly Hill Police Department Shaken by Growing Scandal

The Holly Hill Police Department is caught in a widening scandal, leading to the paid suspension of Sergeant Tom Bentley, marking the third officer sidelined amidst investigations into undisclosed "inappropriate incidents." This follows the resignations and suspensions of top department officials, including the police chief.

City Manager Joe Forte confirmed the involvement of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement but remained reticent about the specific allegations. The scandal has prompted a departmental shuffle, with Sgt. DeniseMarquez reassigned to ensure coverage. Amidst the turmoil, the city is actively seeking a new police chief, hoping to turn over a new leaf in leadership and integrity.
