Ormond Middle Schoolers Go Interstellar with ISS Commander

Nearly 200 students from Volusia County had a thrilling experience at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University last week, engaging in a live chat with astronaut Matthew Dominick aboard the International Space Station. This event, part of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station program, aimed to spark the students' interest in STEM. With questions flying and answers beaming down from space, the young attendees were inspired by the possibilities of space exploration and STEM careers. The excitement was palpable, with both students and faculty reveling in the educational yet exhilarating exchange.

Volusia County School Board to Vote on Random Searches Amid Safety Scramble

Volusia County is considering implementing random searches in schools to enhance safety and deter weapons on campus. Elizabeth Albert, with over two decades of experience in the district and currently the president of the Volusia County Educators, champions metal detectors as a necessary security upgrade. The school board is set to vote on the policy's language soon, with a final decision expected by mid-May. While some see this as a crucial step towards securing schools, concerns about the impact on learning time and the lack of clarity in the policy's language have been raised. Additionally, the feasibility of such measures, given resource constraints, remains in question, with costs yet undetermined.
