Ormond Beach Residents Dive into Government Operations with New Citizens Academy

Ormond Beach has launched its inaugural Citizens Academy, a free six-week program aimed at increasing community involvement in government. Held on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m., the program offers participants insights into municipal operations through meetings with city officials, department-led sessions, and interactive tours. The academy, which filled its 20 available slots quickly, will culminate in a graduation at the June 4 City Commission meeting. Residents interested in future sessions can join a waiting list available on the city's website.

Volusia County Rolls Back Gun Purchase Restrictions As Federal Rules Tighten

The Volusia County Council has unanimously repealed a 1999 ordinance requiring a three-day waiting period and background checks for firearm purchases in public places. The repeal, effective after the April 16 council meeting, does not affect existing regulations for licensed firearm retailers. This local decision comes shortly after federal actions to tighten controls on gun sales, particularly at public events like gun shows. Critics, including Deltona City Commissioner Dana McCool, argue that the repeal could undermine these new federal regulations, while supporters believe it protects Second Amendment rights without impacting licensed sales.
