United Healthcare Division Change Healthcare Hit by Major Data Theft, $870M in Losses

In a high-stakes cyber drama that sent shockwaves through the U.S. healthcare system, a notorious ransomware gang infiltrated Change Healthcare using stolen credentials to remotely worm their way into the tech titan's unprotected systems. According to top brass at UnitedHealth Group (UHG), parent company to Change Healthcare, this security slip-up lacked a critical line of defense—multifactor authentication (MFA).

UnitedHealth's CEO, Andrew Witty, acknowledged in his written testimony to a House subcommittee, which is probing the massive February cyber onslaught. The attack didn't just breach the systems; it led to a major heist of sensitive health data, affecting a staggering number of Americans.

Details from Witty's bombshell testimony reveal that hackers exploited weak spots in a Citrix portal—a tool Change uses to enable remote work access—by logging in with stolen credentials. The big question of how these credentials fell into the wrong hands remains a mystery.

Post-breach, the cybercriminals didn’t just sit on the data; they moved stealthily across the network, siphoning off massive amounts of data before unleashing ransomware on February 21. This forced UnitedHealth to pull the plug on its network to stem the damage.

In a bitter pill to swallow, UnitedHealth later confirmed it coughed up a ransom to the audacious hackers, known as RansomHub, who flaunted the stolen data on the dark web and held it hostage. The financial fallout from the breach is staggering, costing UnitedHealth a cool $870 million in the first quarter alone, despite raking in nearly $100 billion in revenue.
