Ormond Beach Commits to $200,000 Study for Proposed Police and Emergency Center
Ormond Beach is advancing plans to build a new police station and emergency operations center, having appointed JL2 Architecture to conduct a $200,000 space needs analysis. This study, following a 2020 feasibility assessment, will address the project's scope, location, and cost. Despite a funding veto in 2023, the city has secured a $1.45 million state grant this year. The project's estimated cost is $51 million, pending a precise cost evaluation. The city is also considering maintaining some municipal presence at the current police station downtown, even as they plan the new facility.

Arin Hankerd
Arin Hankerd, former Ormond Beach resident and formerly a teacher and assistant football coach at both Mainland High School and Atlantic High School in Volusia County, was handed a 21-year prison sentence for engaging in sexual activity with two students. According to sources, Hankerd, 44, groomed the students at the respective schools before the incidents.
Following his prison term, Hankerd is also mandated to serve 30 years on sex offender probation. At the sentencing, which took place at the S. James Foxman Justice Center in Daytona Beach under Circuit Judge Karen Foxman, Hankerd displayed no discernible reaction to the verdict.
Rare Solar Storm Watch Announced, Northern Lights Visible Far South as South Florida
NOAA has issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm watch due to multiple coronal mass ejections from the sun, with effects expected to last through the weekend and possibly into next week. This watch, the first severe one since January 2005, could impact power grids and communication systems, although catastrophic failures are not anticipated. The public might also witness the northern lights farther south than usual, potentially as far as Alabama and even South Florida.
