Juanita 'Lightnin' Epton, who managed the Daytona International Speedway ticket office since 1959 and witnessed every Daytona 500, has died at 103. Known for her enduring dedication, Epton saw the speedway grow from a small venue to a major sports attraction. She was present for significant racing milestones and was a beloved figure in the NASCAR community. In 2022, the ticket office was named in her honor, celebrating her significant contributions to the sport.

Daytona Beach Experiences July-Like Ocean Temperatures, Heightening Hurricane Season Concerns

Ocean temperatures near Daytona Beach have reached unseasonably high levels that are typically seen in July, prompting concerns as Volusia County braces for a potentially active hurricane season. Clint Mecham, Volusia County's Emergency Management Director, addressed this issue during a recent meeting with local officials at the Daytona Beach International Airport. Mecham reported that the surface water temperature off Daytona Beach was around 85 degrees Fahrenheit, indicating an unusual acceleration in warming trends. This increase in ocean temperature is significant because warmer waters can enhance the formation and intensity of tropical storms. As such, Mecham emphasized the importance of vigilant monitoring and preparedness measures among the community and government officials as they anticipate the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
