Volusia County Seeks Community Input on Proposed Public Transit Fare Increases

Image: Votran Website

As reported earlier the Volusia County Transit Services Division (VOTRAN) reminds residents they will host a series of public meetings in the coming two months to gather community input on proposed fare increases. If approved by the Volusia County Council, these proposed increases would be the first fare adjustments since 2015 and take effect on Jan. 1, 2025. In addition to public meetings, community members can provide feedback through various channels, including direct submissions on buses, via the Votran website, or by mail. This multi-faceted approach ensures that all residents have an opportunity to share their views on the proposed fare changes.

"The proposed increase will allow us to maintain a high level of service across all of our forms of public transportation in the county," stated Transit Services Director Bobbie King. "We are confident that even with the proposed increases, Votran will continue to be a competitive transportation option."

A 13-year-old from South Daytona was arrested after making a bomb threat to Buddy Taylor Middle School in Palm Coast, which led to the school being locked down and thoroughly searched. The threat, made as a dare by a friend at the school, is the latest in a series of disruptions affecting local schools. The suspect, who was found with the phone used for the call, faces several felony charges and could be tried as an adult.

Sleep Talking: Common Yet Manageable Sleep Disturbance, Experts Say

Parasomnias, disruptive sleep behaviors, affect a significant portion of the U.S. population, with up to 65% experiencing issues like sleep talking at some point in their lives, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. This phenomenon, known as somniloquy, not only disturbs the sleep of the individual but can also impact those nearby.

Dr. Carlos Schenck of the Hennepin County Medical Center at the University of Minnesota advises ensuring no underlying conditions are causing the sleep disturbances. While sleep talking is typically benign, it can sometimes signal more severe sleep disorders. An increase in episodes or new symptoms should prompt a consultation with a healthcare provider.

To mitigate the impact of a partner's sleep talking, Jennifer Mundt from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine suggests using white noise machines or earplugs. Schenck recommends sleeping earlier than a sleep-talking partner to minimize disturbances.

Identifying triggers such as stress or alcohol can also help manage the condition. For those who sleep talk more when lying on their back, Schenck proposes a creative solution: sewing a tennis ball into the back of a nightshirt to discourage back sleeping.
