Seabreeze High's Medical Program Proves Crucial in Real-World Emergency
On May 1, a hectic morning for ZZ Nichols, a junior at Seabreeze High School, made a pivotal decision to switch her Starbucks pickup location due to a long line, unknowingly setting herself on a path to a devastating accident scene. Opting for the East Granada Starbucks and a detour down A1A, Nichols encountered a severe crash at 7:55 a.m. that claimed the life of 26-year-old Mary Pezza and led to pending charges against the other driver, Wyatt Dickerson, for reckless driving.
Nichols, trained in CPR and emergency response through the Seabreeze Allied Health Academy, was among the first on the scene, joining lifeguards and bystanders in providing aid before emergency responders arrived. This high school program, designed to prepare students for medical careers, underscored its value in real-world crises, showcasing students' ability to apply their skills under pressure.
The program, led by Kelley Lemon, has nurtured many students like Nichols who aspire to medical careers, boasting high certification pass rates and a curriculum that includes advanced training in patient care. Nichols' proactive involvement at the crash site not only highlights her personal commitment but also represents the practical impact of Seabreeze's specialized education, confirming the program’s success in equipping students for critical situations. Boeing's Starliner Launch Delayed Again, Next Attempt Set for Today
Photo: Nasa.gov
Boeing's long-anticipated launch of the Starliner spacecraft was postponed again on Saturday due to technical issues, marking another setback in a series of delays. The launch, which was to be conducted from Cape Canaveral, Florida, was halted just minutes before the scheduled liftoff by an automatic system halt.
This mission, featuring the United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket, was to carry NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the International Space Station for Boeing's first crewed test flight of the Starliner. The journey to the station is expected to take approximately a week, during which the spacecraft's capabilities for maneuvering and docking will be thoroughly tested.
Initially set for May 6, the launch has faced multiple postponements. Despite the challenges, officials remain hopeful, targeting a new launch window around noon on Sunday. This mission is critical for Boeing as it seeks to validate the Starliner's operational capabilities and gain NASA's certification for regular crewed missions, positioning it as a competitor to SpaceX's Crew Dragon.
Following the scrubbed launch, astronauts Wilmore and Williams were safely returned to the crew quarters. The next launch opportunity is Sunday, June 2, at 12:03 p.m. EDT for launch of NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test. (NASA.gov)
Survey Reveals Mourning Behaviors in Dogs After Companion's Death
Dogs, much like humans, display behaviors that can be interpreted as signs of mourning following the loss of a companion, according to findings from a recent survey. Dog owners have reported significant changes in the daily activities and emotional states of their pets after the death of another household dog, including alterations in playing, sleeping, and eating habits, as well as increased fearfulness.
While the concept of dogs experiencing mourning similar to humans remains scientifically unconfirmed due to a lack of robust evidence, it is suggested that these behavioral changes might stem from the loss of an attachment figure and the subsequent upheaval in the dog’s environment. This includes not only a break in routine but also shifts in the behavior of the grieving human companions, who may seek comfort from their pets. Such factors contribute to a broader sense of instability that could manifest in attention-seeking or even aggression as anxiety-driven responses. (Pet Helpful)
