Another Scam: Flagler Authorities Uncover Phone Scam Involving Faux Sheriff Employee

Authorities in Flagler County apprehended two individuals on Thursday in connection to an elaborate fraud scheme involving the impersonation of a local sheriff's office employee over the telephone. The Bunnell Police Department, along with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, announced the arrest of Shawn Dufeal, 25, and Jameil LaBennett, 28. These arrests are part of a broader investigation into several scam calls reported on the same day.

According to sources, the fraudulent calls were made by individuals claiming to be Sergeant Miley, a real employee of the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Victims were falsely informed they had outstanding arrest warrants but could avoid arrest by making a payment. Through meticulous investigative work, authorities were able to trace the scam back to Dufeal and LaBennett, who were subsequently arrested outside the Flagler County Government Center.

Dufeal is charged with Scheme to Defraud – False Pretenses (Over $750), Grand Theft – Pickpocketing ($5K – $10K), and Fraudulent Use of Identification without Consent. LaBennett faces similar charges, including Falsely Impersonating a Police Officer. The investigation remains active, with potential additional charges pending.

Sheriff Rick Staly and BPD Chief Brannon have issued public warnings about this type of scam, emphasizing that no law enforcement officer will ever call citizens requesting money to avoid arrest. They urge anyone who received such calls to report them, as the information could prove crucial in further investigations. (Flagler County Sheriff)

Florida to Vote on Recreational Marijuana, What It Means for Medical Users

In November, Florida voters will decide on Amendment 3, which seeks to legalize recreational marijuana for adults while preserving the existing medical marijuana program. The amendment would allow adults over 21 to possess and use marijuana, with recreational sales subject to taxation. Medical marijuana benefits, like home delivery and priority dispensary access, would remain exclusive to medical patients. (Daytona News-Journal) ($)

Quick-Thinking Elderly Couple and Armed Samaritan Thwart Carjacking in Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach Police, June 2, 2024 - On June 1, 2024, at approximately 10:50 a.m., the Ormond Beach Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at the Exxon station located at 1622 N US Hwy 1. The suspect, Marvette Perry (36), of Jacksonville, Florida, was apprehended after attempting to forcibly take a vehicle occupied by an elderly couple.

Upon arrival, officers found one of the vehicle's occupants holding onto Perry’s leg, preventing her escape. A good Samaritan drew his firearm to ensure the safety of those involved but subsequently put it away since he did not see Perry reach for a weapon. The Samaritan stood by and reminded Perry he was armed until officers arrived on scene. The owners of the car are uninjured.

Perry resisted arrest but was secured and taken into custody. She was charged with multiple offenses, including carjacking, burglary with assault, and resisting an officer.

Chief Godfrey praised the efforts involved in resolving the situation. “Our officer’s quick response, the bravery of the good Samaritan, and the resilience of the elderly couple were instrumental in preventing a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.”

Remember, in emergency situations, prioritize your safety and that of others. If you witness a crime, dial emergency services immediately and, if safe to do so, offer assistance while maintaining a safe distance. (Ormond Beach Police -Facebook)

NASA's next attempt to launch the Boeing Starliner spacecraft aboard a ULA Atlas V rocket is scheduled for June 5, following a delay due to technical issues with ground support equipment. The mission, part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, aims to send astronauts to the International Space Station for about a week. After resolving a malfunction in the power supply system, all systems are now fully operational. Favorable weather conditions are anticipated, and astronauts Barry Wilmore and Suni Williams are set for their first mission aboard the Starliner, currently completing final preparations at Kennedy Space Center.
