Ignoring the Warnings - Why Many in Florida Stay Put During Hurricane Threats

A AAA survey indicates that about one-quarter of Floridians would ignore hurricane evacuation orders, with many choosing not to prepare for hurricane season in advance. Most residents would only evacuate for hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. The reasons for staying range from protecting property to financial constraints and concerns about pet safety. With NOAA forecasting an intense hurricane season, AAA emphasizes the importance of preparedness, including evacuation plans and adequate insurance coverage. (ClickOrlando.com)

Federal health officials have announced a recall of whole cucumbers from Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. in Florida due to potential Salmonella contamination, linked to an outbreak affecting at least 141 individuals. The recalled cucumbers, distributed to several states including Florida between May 17 and May 21, 2024, are dark green and do not include mini or English varieties. The FDA is investigating if this strain of Salmonella, detected by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, matches that of an ongoing outbreak. Salmonella infections can cause severe symptoms and potentially lead to hospitalization or death, particularly in vulnerable groups.. (Daytona News-Journal) ($)

AST SpaceMobile and Verizon have announced a strategic partnership aimed at delivering 100% geographical cellular coverage across the continental United States using the premium 850 MHz spectrum. Verizon is set to invest $100 million to integrate AST SpaceMobile's direct-to-cellular service, designed to ensure connectivity even in the most remote areas.

Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, highlighted that this alliance marks a significant commercial milestone by potentially eliminating connectivity dead zones across the nation. The initiative will target expansive coverage using the largest and most powerful commercial communication arrays ever deployed in low Earth orbit.

Srini Kalapala, Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development at Verizon, emphasized the strategic importance of utilizing their spectrum in conjunction with AST’s satellite network. This approach aims to extend reliable cellular service to regions traditionally beyond the reach of land-based cellular infrastructures. (Techaeris)
