In Volusia County, plans to equip code enforcement officers with body cameras have been shelved for the time being, following deliberations by the County Council that highlighted legal and privacy concerns. The initiative, intended to enhance transparency in code enforcement operations, met a significant obstacle: code enforcement officers, unlike their law enforcement counterparts, are not automatically authorized to record individuals without consent.

The lack of explicit legal protection could expose officers to potential lawsuits and criminal charges if they record without obtaining prior permission. "This is problematic," Vice Chairman and District 4 Councilman Troy Kent noted during the council discussions.

As a result, the council has decided not to move forward with the body camera initiative. Instead, they will seek legislative changes at the state level that would provide legal cover for code enforcement officers wishing to record their interactions with the public.

Teens, grab your colored pencils or markers and help library staff put your art in patrons’ wallets!

Teens ages 13 to 19 can enter the Volusia County Public Library’s design contest for a limited edition teen library card. Entry forms will be available starting July 1 in the library branches and online at https://www.volusialibrary.org. Entry forms must be signed by a parent or legal guardian if the teen is under 18. Up to five entries may be submitted. Artwork must be original, previously unpublished, and free of copyright restrictions. Entries must be received by 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31.

"We have so many creative, talented teens, and we want to give them an opportunity to feature their artwork on these teen library cards, which will reach thousands of library users and promote the love for reading and learning,” said Library Services Director Lucinda Colee.

The public can vote for their favorite design between Sept. 3 and Sept. 13. The winner will be announced Oct. 9. For more information, visit https://www.volusialibrary.org.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office Alerts Seniors of Rising Grandparent Scam

Volusia County authorities are warning seniors about the increasing prevalence of the "grandparent scam," where scammers pose as relatives in distress or legal representatives to extract money. These criminals often use urgent and emotional scenarios, such as fake accidents involving a relative, to convince victims to send money, which is collected in person by couriers under the guise of ride-share drivers. The Sheriff's Office advises the public to avoid unknown callers, verify suspicious calls independently, limit personal information online, and report any scam attempts to law enforcement.  (Fox35)
