Florida’s Disaster Preparedness Tax-Free Days End June 14 Amid Calm Forecast

Graphic by Florida Dept of Revenue

As the hurricane season approaches, Florida residents are granted a brief reprieve from sales taxes on essential disaster supplies. The National Hurricane Center confirmed that no tropical cyclones are anticipated over the next week, aligning with the onset of Florida’s first disaster preparedness sales tax holiday of the year, which began on June 1 and will continue until Friday, June 14.

The state has also scheduled another tax exemption period from August 24 through September 6, aiming to encourage households to stock up on necessary items well ahead of any storm threats. During these periods, consumers can purchase disaster-related goods tax-free, a savings that extends to both human and pet necessities.

While the immediate forecast remains clear, officials and experts advise residents to take advantage of these tax holidays to prepare for the unpredictable nature of hurricane season.

Florida Parents Sue State Over Book Removal Law, Claim First Amendment Violation

VA federal lawsuit has been initiated by three Florida parents against a 2023 law that facilitates the removal of books from school libraries, alleging it infringes on their First Amendment rights by not providing a method to contest such removals. Represented by several advocacy groups, the parents argue the law unfairly favors certain parental viewpoints, effectively silencing opposition to book bans. The lawsuit underscores ongoing debates and legal challenges surrounding educational censorship in Florida. (Ormond Observer)

Thinking About Liposuction? Be Sure To Check Your Provider’s Credentials

An Orlando doctor may lose his medical license after a judge supported claims that he botched a liposuction procedure, resulting in a patient's death. Dr. Christopher Arthur Roy Walker faces allegations of incompetence and failure to meet professional standards during a 2021 "Brazilian butt lift" surgery. Judge Andrew Manko's report highlighted severe medical errors that caused fatal internal injuries to the patient. The Florida Department of Health will make the final decision on Dr. Walker's license, with possibilities ranging from revocation to heavy fines and restrictions on his practice. (Daytonatimes.com)

Potential Tropical System in Gulf Could Impact Florida with Heavy Rainfall, 5-10 inches

Meteorologists are tracking a low-pressure area moving from the Caribbean into the Gulf of Mexico, which might evolve into a tropical system next weekend. Central Florida is expected to receive significant rainfall from this system, with totals possibly reaching 5-10 inches, starting Tuesday. Although development into a tropical storm is currently unlikely due to strong wind shear, conditions could become more favorable by the weekend. The National Hurricane Center has yet to predict any development over the next week, but the situation remains under close observation. (WESH6.com)
