Rare Day-Nesting Sea Turtle Returns to Ponce Inlet, Marks Eighth Visit
Photo: Volusia County
On June 10, a Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, tagged back in 2005, returned to nest at Ponce Inlet, Volusia County, marking her eighth visit. This turtle species, which predominantly nests during the day and primarily breeds in Mexico, contributes to the rare occurrence of their nests in Florida. This year, Volusia County has matched record counts from previous peak years with four Kemp's ridley nests among a total of 283 sea turtle nests. Officials are calling on the public to reduce beachfront lighting and clear potential obstructions during the nesting season, which lasts until October 31, to help protect the emerging hatchlings. Conservation efforts and further information are available through local resources. (Volusia County)
Florida Allocates $10M to Explore Relocating Ormond Beach Fuel Terminal
Photo: Belvedere Terminals
Florida's state budget includes a $10 million provision to potentially relocate a fuel terminal from Ormond Beach to a more suitable location within Volusia, Brevard, or Flagler counties. This funding decision comes in response to community safety concerns and ongoing discussions about the appropriateness of the terminal's current location. The funds, allocated by the Florida Department of Commerce, would cover land acquisition, infrastructure construction, and other necessary improvements. Volusia County officials have stated their readiness to apply for these funds should Belvedere Terminals, the project developer, decide to move the facility. The budget also allocates $2.1 million for expanding the county's Emergency Operations Center to better serve as a saferoom and training facility during emergencies and non-emergency times, respectively. Ormond Beach Historical Society Hosts First Summer Camp to Ignite Local History Passion in Youth
The Ormond Beach Historical Society's "Discover and Explore Ormond Beach Summer Camp" has successfully launched, teaching 19 local children about their hometown's history through engaging activities. The camp, running from June 10 to June 14, includes educational experiences like making molasses cookies to learn about early settlers and visiting local historical sites. Spearheaded by OBHS education chair Erlene Turner and supported by board member Jayne Fifer, the camp has been highly praised by OBHS President Mary Smith. The initiative is supported by 30 enthusiastic volunteers, ensuring a rich educational experience. Participants like 11-year-old Nova Neumann have expressed excitement, particularly about interactive activities like baking. The camp not only educates but also fosters a deeper connection and pride in local heritage among the youth of Ormond Beach. (Ormond Observer)
